Hammer Handle
I do lie, but in not the way you think. I don't like to tell people what I actually catch...I always catch smaller and less. Saves more for me I believe the further away from the boat you lose the fish, the bigger it is. Get a huge tug and lose the fish right away, the fisherman says "Wow, that was at least a 20 pounder!". Closer to the boat and lost, 10 pounds. To the boat and lost, 5 pounds. Caught, actually a 1 pound fish. Listen to your fishing buddy, and you will agree. Blake
I never lie about fishin....I was brought up to be responcible for my own actions, respect my elders, go to church, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you! I get sick and tired of all these liars! lying just to make themselves feel better. Yah sure you caught an 18 inch crappie in 6 inches of water, and on and on................. O.K... That first sentence was a lie.....but everything else I said was the truth!
CrappieAttitude
Interesting thread. It made me think of a guy that we deer hunt with. If you ever ask him if he saw anything, his go to response was "Yea, a doe and two fawns" (Needless to say, you could sneak up on this guy while hunting in your squeakin snowpants walking through two inches of dry leaves) Did he lie? I would venture to say that it is very likely. I think some people find comfort in lying in order to make them appear to be "great hunters / fisherman" to others. I don't let my secrets fly freely to that many people, but I am also secure enough that if I should happen to get skunked while fishing, or don't see anything while deer hunting I can say with dignity that it was a slow day. Even the best of em have bad days, so why lie to prove to others that you are competent. CA
Questor
I do lie about fish, or at least become a bit evasive. It's when somebody is obviously trying to get me to do their fishing for them and they ask me a lot of pointed questions about where to fish. I'll give free advice to people I know and like, but not to a strange. I'll go so far as to tell what general part of the lake is working, and what depth is good. Beyond that, it's up to them. Questor
I recall one time a really irritating guy asked me whether I had caught any fish and I told him I'd caught a few little ones. It was difficult to be credible in this situation because the guy kept switching his gaze back and forth between my face and the half a big northern that was too big to fit entirely in my cooler. Hammer Handle
I learned to "lie" from my dad.He lives on the lake and I think people think he is the worse fisherman in the world.I remember as a kid and the large crappies were biting. We were the only two in our spot. If we caught a big one, in a plastic bag it would go and up his snowmobile pants leg. People came by checking us out, only to see a few little sunfish...and they would leave. While walking home, the pastor of our church stopped us walking to the shore. "Catch any?""See for yourself." and my dad would show him the 6 or 7 little sunnies in his pail. Walking on the way home, my dad explains "I did not lie, I just shown him the fish in the pail. I didn't say they were not biting. Also, if he found out, the whole church would be in my secret spot." Ha ha!We still have "secret spots" to this day. Some have been found out, others haven't. Some have changed. If people are on the lake, my dad may not even go to his favorite spot in fear people will find out. Now that is a serious and secretive fisherman! papabear
Im sorry to report I raised my daughter wrong. She respects her elders, goes to church gets good grades. But ever since I taught her to fish she has tended to lie from time to time. Other than that she is an angel. She caught a 17 inch walleye last summer by the time school started it was 20 inches. I do not know where she gets it from, I know that fish was half the size of my 24, or 29 or maybe my 34 inch walleye I caught that day. unfortunately we practice catch and release, and my camera broke so I cant prove it.
