Used Youth 870 express

I'm looking to buy a used (like new condition) youth 870 express 20 ga. I am buying this from a friend and I am not sure what a fair price is. Any thoughts? Gander Mtn is selling new for $270.

It sounds like you know quite a bit about the gun already. I know the markup on new guns is very little. Used guns have a little larger percentage at retail stores so he won't get a ton for it there, but you could certainly call a decent gun shop or sporting goods store and get a rough quote.

Here is the problem you will run into, as I did myself a couple years ago. I asked about a used youth model 870 before we bought the new one. The gun shop told me that most people keep them instead of trading them in and pass them down to the next kid or a cousin or something. He told me if he ever sees used ones, they have been through the mill and are shot. Otherwise, if he gets a good used one like you are talking about, he can sell it for almost what a new one costs because there just aren't many used ones available and so he doesn't have to discount them. I'd say if you can buy it for 80% of new you are doing real good based on what I learned. If not, just go buy a new one.

I would think around $175 would be a fair offer. If anymore than that, you might as well buy brand new as there are some real good deals out there if you have time to shop around. Great gun, have fun with it!!

Like anything, its a personal choice. The only real way to assess the market is to look a numerous examples and compare what your looking at to them.
