Anything I drop, falls down the hole!

Saw in a different post where a guy lost his lantern. Last year at LOW A fellow fisherman dropped his glasses. As any icefisherman knows, anything you drop on the ice will head for and fall directly into the icehole. Since most of the things I've dropped (and wanted to retrieve)are metal, I thought about rigging up an old speaker magnet to try and get stuff back. Any other ideas?

Paul,
It does increase your chances. When my buddy dropped his glasses doen the hole, we had two cameras, which actually gave us good perspective (we were fishing in two houses when the glasses went down and combined resources). The frustrating part was hooking them. The bomber driver even went back to the lodge and got a dragging hook (a little disconcerting to say the least shocked.gif ). We worked on that for 2 1/2 hours. It would be nice if things that drop in the drink would fall straight down, but the glasses "fluttered" and were off to the side. We even tried a flying jig to get something over to the side, and came close, but no go. Cameras are an excellent tool, but you still have to "grab" your stuff by some means.

I saw a neat lookin little device at Cabelas a couple of weeks ago. Called the Snagmaster (I think) Its supposed to free up hung up lures and other things that get lost in the lake, never used it so I don't know how well it works. But for 7 bucks its worth a try. I also seem to remember one of the catalog companies (cabelas, bass pro)used to have a big orange magnet in them. mad.gif I would give you the name but I can't find it!ARGHH!!
Hope this helps a lil,
-Mr. Fisherman

Forgive me for asking, but why didn't you drill an additional hole?

Anything dropped while ice fishing goes down the hole. I think that's Newton's third law ... no maybe Murphy's law of the ice house ... but it gravity raises its ugly head in there somewhere too. My wife knocked her sunglasses off las year while setting the hook, our son who was three at the time witnessed this and told everyone he saw in the next month of how mommy's glasses went in the lake. I have a walkie talkie on the bottom of Mille Lacs. If you want to try calling fish in, it's on 3 mile reef (west of Liberty Beach) and it's set on frs channel 7.

Northern Hydraulics sells a "fishing magnet" with a handle on top to tie a rope to. It was sitting on a metal table in the store and had a lot of pull.

Buck-o
We were in a rental on LOW, and didn't have an auger. Guess we could have asked the bomber driver to drill another hole. even when we hooked them, they would tip and the hook would come free. That's when we wished we had a strong magnet

A good friend of mine is fond of dropping things down the hole. A few years ago we had our house on a local lake and were catching alot of crappie. With in 1 hour he managed to drop his radio and watch down the hole. After that we didnt catch another fish in that spot. I told him it was because now the fish had a watch so they knew when it was 4:00 and we were there so they listened to the oldies station till we left.

Geez, I am the one to be careful. I dropped a week old cell phone down the hole, then last fall dropped that replacement phone into the water and muck duck hunting (I saved that one and after taking it apart it works fine today). Both phones were buttoned in my flannel pocket and I always tend to bend over to pick something up and "ploop" it falls out.
Others include a clamp on rattle reel (I recovered in 30 feet of water with an Angel Eye spoon!
-radio
-various ice fishing jigs, spoons.
-beer!
I know I can think of more......

After 3 too many ice skimmers (2 were kicked/knocked, one dropped) I drilled a hole in the metal handle and put about a 5 or 6 foot lanyard to it from the pole on my portable. It works ok, but I rigged a better system on my buddies skimmer (his was one of the ones I knocked down the hole). I put one of those closed cell foam fishing rod savers that you can attach to kids (or adults) rods to keep them afloat in the summer. Works great all wrapped up in duct tape and unless you push it down the hole there's no way to get it stuck under the ice next to the hole.

I think this is the same force that sucks your golf balls into the drink or the woods. I've had good luck using a jigging rapala to retrive lost articles that have fluttered off to the side smile.gif

Hey guys,

Kinda new to this site, but a freind of mine managed to leave a rod in his house and a fish took. Anyway, it was shallow enough to see it (9' Pretty Clear). We drilled a hole above the road and tied a gaff to a rope. Well after a coupla tries we got the thing out. Another approach is to use a treble-hook and a weight it a couple of inches from the hook. It may take awhile, but it works, if it is the right object at the bottom. Another tip BE CAREFUL. Good luck guys.

Last year, a buddy lost 2 rod and reels down the hole. We retreived the second in an strange way:

The first rod went down when a group of non-fishing friends "bar-hopped" into our house for an hour. The rod made the loudest scratching sound possible on its way to the hole. The people nearest the hole had no clue what to do. It was hilarious.

The second rod went down when a Northern hit it while we were fishing crappies. It went down in a flash. We were still enjoying our buddy's misery 15 minutes later, when a 4lb Northern hit in a different corner hole. When we pulled it up, there was a second lure in its mouth, and there was his rod still attached!

Wish PITA was there! That Northern was still cruising for food dragging around a rod and reel. I think our buddy was in way more pain than that Northern was!
