Last ice fishing trip fantastic!

Recommended Posts

The last Morson ice fishing trip of the season was very good indeed for walleyes. Tons of fish in the 14-21 inch category and we even managed a PIG, about 28 inches and packed full of spawn. She must have gone close to 10 pounds!

(I have some nice digital photos but don't have a web page to post them on. If anyone knows another way, let me know. Some web sites allow cutting and pasting but that won't work here.)

The females have really packed on the spawn weight over the past few weeks, as on March 1 they didn't have any spawn. This fish was about the same length as one I got a month ago but easily two pounds heavier. Even some of the crappies we cleaned had spawn in them this weekend.

There's still a ton of ice but the melted snow is making travel on the lake wet and tough. We drove a truck up to Miles Bay on Saturday and fished crappies and pushed 8-inches of slushy water all the way. Lots of people up there basking in the sun! It was 55 degrees and beautiful -- fished ina short-sleeved shirt. Caught a few crappies but nothing great.

The sunset bite for walleyes was great on our secret reef, fishing about 13 feet down under the ice.

This was a fantastic winter for walleyes through the ice up there. With 70 degree temps the ice will soon separate from shore so we won't make it up now until the ice melts. Can't wait for open water!

PS Bennelli Dude! Post your e-mail address here so I can send you photos of Birdy with the 10-pounder! I have some nice shots of your dad, too. Sorry I missed you on Friday but we didn't get up to the cabin until 1 p.m. take care.

Hey WT! Sounds like you had a blast! Sure wish I coulda fished you guys. [email protected] is my email. I got a picture of me with a laker I caught the other day up in Whitefish. Got it within the first ten minutes of fishing on a glow tube in about 35 ft. Never seen a fish move so fast on the Vex, he showed up at 10 ft below my jig and WHAM he was on. Tasted good too! Just got it back today from my buddy who smoked it for me. Just gotta remember to save my dad some cuz he gave me one of his fish too. It was pretty nice out there on Friday, my dad told me to go ahead when we left Whitefish and I made sure everything was good and latched down on the sled and hauled for Morson. So I got my last speed thrill for the season on the sled. I thought about shooting the narrows at Turtle lake but then I didnt want anyone following my tracks especially when they dont know the area. I heard some augers running on the south end of Hay when i was waiting for a guy at narrows there by turtle lake. Have to keep you posted on when the lake opens up. I head for the west coast tonight and should be back thursday night so I look forward to some pictures. Hope all is well! B-dude

It seems fish were comitting hari-kari everywhere this weekend. We got our crappies at Nestor Falls in a quick and workman like manner. Since we only had two trout rods for four guys, we headed SW to Baudette and got our walleyes on the south shore of LOW. This was out last trip since the landings and ice roads are deteriorating fast. There were several vehicles stuck and rumors of a bombardier breaking through the ice near Wheeler's Point .

I was the one waiting by the narrows by Turtle lake sitting on the orange Cat. The other guy wasnt sure about where we were gonna fish so my dad told me to wait there for him since I knew where we were going. How did you guys make out that day? We got 3 total, biggest was 11 lbs and you couldnt ask for a nicer day that day. I was back at home in Baudette by 5pm that day. Of course I trailered up to Morson to my folks place. Was out yesterday at Hay island for crappies and it was slow. I think we got about 20, only 2 other groups were out there and they showed up after we did. Oh yeah we drove 2 full size pickups out there. Some soft spots here and there but it was good going. Seen 28 deer making their way back to the Aluneau Peninsula. It was 2's and 3's througout the day crossing the ice but none of them got close to us. B-dude p.s small world huh

B-dude -

We only got one but since it was my first trip up their we did a lot of scouting. The auger got quite a workout. My partners are headed up this weekend it looks like I am done until open water (unless this cool weather keeps up).

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
