carp shooting

Has anyone been out yet to go shoot carp yet this year? I had went out after school today and shot a few. The carp are not real active yet. Suppose gonna have to wait till warmer water.

Not even ruff fish. Here the carp and suckers are just starting to run up the cricks.

Nope, they want to protect any game fish that are running up the creeks from an errant arrow.

Do they still stay up in the cricks after the season is taken off

Everywhere except way up north the spawn is coming to a close by the time the rough fish season is open.

Right now most of the creeks are still pretty iced up. They are runnign a bit, but there is still ice frozen to the bottom.

Power: Here on Diamond lake in Kandiyohi County Minnesota the carp spawn in JULY! and to the post about are they in streams after spring run... YES but not in the numbers!

Here in Madison SD they will spawn in about another month. They are starting to make there way up cricks now.

Last year they were going ape [PoorWordUsage]y in a lake not far from sparcebag on bass opener. I have read that if conditions are right, carp will spawn several times per year.

I always just shoot them out of a boat. We have a platform to stand on and on hot summer days they are at the surface.

WHen I said the spawn I meant the "gamefish" such as walleyes, not the carp. Someone before expressed that the carp season starts later to avoid bowfishers shooting things like walleyes or other gamefish in the same creeks or rivers spawning.

I'm watching this with great interest cause I've never done bowfishing, but I love archery. Might have to try it this year.

I just got into Archery last year and I am also interested in giving it a try. I have a Switchback XT....how hard would it be to convert it for bowfishing? Do you need a certian arrow rest?

i would recomend on buying a cheap old bow that you wouldn't care if you droped it or got dirt on it. just because you have a very nice bow and i would hate to hear that you dropped it in the lake. all i have is a bow that i paid $30 for and it works great. as for gear you can go to a sporting goods store and get a reel and a rest for around $70 but you get a very nice reel. go take a look and talk to someone at the sporting goods store they should be able to set you up. or even a archery shop..

Power if ya get into it I can tell you of some good spots close to the city.I use a old wood recurve bow with 40 yr. old spool line keeper W/150-200 lb. line.Most of my spots are by Prairie Island Casino I grew up down that way!

Yeah, I've got at least a 30 year old compound that I traded a 30-pack of Stroh's for Works great! You'll want something with a light draw--mine is a 30lb and it works just fine. Your arm will get awful sore if you're pulling back a 65 pound bow all day. As for an arrow rest, I just shoot mine of the ledge (recommended by a guy at an archery shop I went to). If you get an arrow rest, get a sturdy one because fiberglass arrows are HEAVY.

My buddy uses a whisker biscuit, he just cut off the top portions of the ring and it works great. I have used the roller rests and the arrow falls off quite often. I also would not use your nice bow, not because of water but because of the eggs. They get everywhere and are hard to remove if dried. You will also want to shoot fingers because you can shoot faster.

Oh yes, the eggs! They are difficult to remove wet, darn near impossible when dry. Boat carpet is the worst!!!

If you are wanting to set up your normal bow for bowfishing your looking at around $85 $60 for a good arrow and reel and a Bow fishing wisker biscuit for $25 on hsolist. If you have a wisker biscuit you can just replace the buscuit with the one made for Bow fishing. It has very hard bristles and works great. I set my old bow up like this and my buddies. I have 3 extra buscuits if you want one.
