Jim W
Yup, you are better off buying new ones!I took them to a local lawn mower blade sharpener fellow and he even struggled getting a real nice even cut. Not to say it can't be done. Good luck in your challenge!
cdnfisherman
swap them for sharp ones @ the local bait shop, or send them in to Strikemaster. Cheaper than buying new ones.
Dave
At Walmart, I saw a sharpener from Strikemaster for $7. It appears you pull it across the blade.
Guest
It's not too tough to sharpen auger blades, you just gotta be **** sure you go with the bevel. I sharpened my dads for him last week, cuts like a dream. It's kind of chancy though, cuz if you sharpen it , and you don't do it right, you wreck it. bushbunny
Thorvie puts out a commercial blade sharpener. It is quite pricey, however, if one were retired, it would provide handy cash income with some evening work that the revenuers would not have to be aware of, particularly if one is in an area that has a lot of ice fishermen. Thorvie has a HSOforum - thorvie.com/ice.htm
Guest
Pricey is an understatment. At $1195.00 you would have to sharpen a a lot of blades just to pay for it.
Guest
tellin ya, as long as you go with the bevel, you can sharpen them on any stone, or with any sharpener.
hydro
If you look closely at hand auger blades you will see that the top bevel changes it's angle from the inside to outside edge. To sharpen the blade you will have to roll it slightly as you run it across the stone. To be successful the blade will have to be EXTREMELY sharp. Not an easy thing to accomplish. I suggest a medium Arkansas or Diamond hone followed by a hard Arkansas and then a leather strop charged with buffing compound. This produces a razor sharp edge and has worked well for me. Do not touch the bottom edge of the blades! That angle must remain flat to allow the blades to bite into the ice.Good luck.
dickie
Regarding sharpening ice auger blades:For years I have used a "Lansky" style sharpener to sharpen knives, arrow heads and my auger. This is the system with 3-4 sharpening stones that comes with L shaped rods,a T shaped jig and guide and a bottle of honing oil.The blade to be sharpened is clamped in the T shaped jig, the L shaped rod is inserted in a slot on the shot leg of the T which sets the sharpening angle. This system will put a razor edge on your auger blade.Be sure to file the edges of any big knicks in the blade prior to using the stones so as not to tear up the stones.Good fishing to you all.Let me know how it works.Dickie------------------
