Other than globes that break! How many of you have a coleman that lights like this (BOOOM). It scares the H E Double L outta me. It is a double mantle coleman lantern. I have to let if fill with a little bit of gas before I can light the d*%$ thing. Any ideas. And yes, I am real careful. I don't let it fill with to much gas before I try it again. I am about ready to bring it back to Wally World and tell them to take it back. It dosen't look like there is any adjustment to the ignitor. Any ideas?

I hear you guy's, I have a double mantel Coleman powerhouse and break a globe each year. I average 4 sets of mantels a year also. I have the Coleman foam wrap and red plastic case. Why can't they make a 1/4" thick tempered globe? $$$ that's why!
What we've done in the permanent shack is use those portable jumpstart battery packs (18 Amp Hour) and a 120Volt 300 Watt inverter and power up 3 two foot flourescent lights. Each light takes about a half amp peak to start then idle at around <400 milli amps. The inverter also sucks some current and the fans are loud but we put the pack and inverter outside and the inside of the shack is quiet. So far we've gotten 5+ hours out of them. You can plug them into the cig lighter and recharge them while your using them also. It works sweet! No fumes, no hiss, no fuel, no mantels, no globes... but no heat either. Flourescents can take a beating also without burning out unlike incandescents.

Try it you'll like it.

Ferny.

I used to have the same problems... replacing mantels nearly every trip. Then 2 weeks ago on the way fishin I opened my side door and my lantern fell out. The glass broke and I couldn't find a replacement on the way out of town so I opted for a new lantern all together. I bought the Coleman Northstar, the mantel connects on both the top and the bottom, it has a protective metal guard that goes around the glass, and it also comes with the soft carrying case. I have used it 4 times now with no problems and it puts out quite a bit of heat too. It runs on the 1 lb propane tanks, which is nice because they fit perfectly in the end of my Croxton Pond bag. So far I give it a thumbs up!

I have 2 of the rechargable lanterns that I bought at Target and I really like them. They cost about 20 bucks and they come with a 110 rechargeable cord and also a cigarette adapter. No fuel, no mantels, no mess.

Hi Crappie Hunter,
Yup, my Coleman started doing the same thing this year. I'd go to light it and BOOM! It never failed to get my attention while it was sitting on my lap and it would go off. It seemed to be getting worse because about every third lighting it blow the end out of one of the mantles. It took me a while before I could hear the faint hissing and therefore understand the needle valve was not seating properly. With it not seating, as soon as I'd pump it up, a very small amount of gas was getting to the mantles before I opened the valve. The longer it took to get my lighter lit, turn on the valve, and get it inserted, a whole lot of gas would be waiting and BOOM!

I took the lantern completely apart last week and cleaned the parts as best I could and put it back together again paying particular attention to the tightness of the on/off valve stem's packing nut. No more leaking and subsequently no more BOOMING now!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
