Minimum roof pitch

Looking to build a screen porch on the house this summer. What is the minimum roof pitch I can go with yet still use shingles? It looks like the steepest I can go is a 2/12 pitch. Will this work?

The minimum pitch for most if not all shingles is 3/12.

you could get buy with 2/12 if you used an ice/water barrier instead of tar paper. the ice/water is a rubber membrane that sticks to the sheething on the roof and seals around nails and also to its self, its most commonly used on the bottom +/-6' of a roof to prevent water intrusion caused by ice damming. if you go this route, id make sure that the membrane is used on the roof of your home because you'd be creating an area for an ice dam to happen more easily.

My boat house roof is 2/12 and we did use three tab shingles on it. We did use ice barrier over the entire roof. Also we shingles in mid July so we had hot enough weather to make sure the tabs sealed. That was 10 years ago and it has not failed. It can be done but I don't think anyone is really going to recommend that you do it. I would take special attention with flashing up next to the house.
