andy j
Yesterday I was fishing the St. louis river and I looked down my hole and saw a little fish in my hole, At first I thought it was a bullhead. I caught it with my scooper and then noticed it was not a bullhead, I have seen plenty of baby bullheads being from Iowa HA HA, I have heard that one so many times, anyway the fish was about a inch and half long and was grey not black like a bullhead. The eyes are on the top of its head like a flathead and doesn't have a forked tail like a channel. They tail is almost like a flathead or bullhead but longer and skinner. I am thinking maybe its a baby flathead, but I didn't think there were to many flatheads north of the minnesota river, Then it got me thinking is this one of those OTHER catfish species that you read about in books or magazines. If it was a BABY flathead, channel, or even a bullhead wouldn't it have grown bigger then a inch and half by winter, I would think so. Anybody have any thoughts? Lunker
Could it have been something like a sculpin? I caugth one on mille lacs a few years ago, looks like a bullhead or something but with little feathery things on the gills.
Wiskers
It may have been a stone cat. The look a lot like mini flat heads but they do not get very big. They are golden or greenish in color but that may varry as to the water they are in.The head looks like someone stepped on it? ------------------Wiskers Guiding ServiceRed River & Minnesota River, for Channel Cats, Flatheads & WalleyesCrookston, MN[email protected]218-280-0442
CANOPY SAM
Stonecat. We affectionately referred to them as "Icks" growing up. Pesky little critters, and a really nasty sting if your careless with em'.
so haaad
I had a big dogfish come up my hole in January. He sipped air off the surface, stared me in the face for a few seconds, and slid back down the hole. That was a first...
simplefish
Madtom, it was probably a madtom. Related to the catfish. Good walleye bait. Can be kept in an aquarium fairly well. They can grow to be a couple pounds. They range in color from black to gray, green to brown. In the spring often times in smaller streams, lakes, or swamps I see hundreds of them, all schooled together. I sometimes get them with my minnows from the shop or when I net bait. Sculpins have frills on their sides by the gills that look like fans, and bullheads generally are spotted when they are that small. Either way, it's a good sign. They like cleaner, well oxygenated water. HTH.
Caesarfishinguytoo
Andy, I read your post and got quite a kick out of it when I read it!! Were you able to remove the catfish yourself or did it make it to the colon and you had to rush to the emergency room. Just Kidding, just caught me kinda humerous thats all!!------------------I like Tail
