Not sure if this answers your question or how it compares to the Canadian Hydro Charts, but here's a look at a spot on Rainy as shown by the 2007 navionics chip (the 2006 chip image was identical).

Maybe this is nowhere near where you're interested in.. ? If you'd like, post a more meaningful waypoint for both LOW and Rainy and I'll put those up for comparison.

Schweady,

Thanks for the response to my post on Rainy Lake. I appreciate you taking the time to copy and paste a small portion of the Rainy map. I'll take you up on your offer to try another spot for comparison. This summer I will be spending some time at Camp Narrows lodge in Northwest Bay. I'll be using Canadian Hydro map #6106 for reference. On the far south east section of this map is Woodchuck Island. A coordinate just north of this island is approximately N 48 degrees 50' by W 93 degrees 22'. Just northwest of this point is a red marker AV16. Any chance you can find this spot and print out the surrounding area for comparison. I hope this doesn't amount to you trying to find a needle in a haystack. I would just like to make some comparison with some finer details on a paper map with the chip. If you found the spot, how long did it take to find it?

Thanks again for your time.

It took a little under a minute to find it. No haystack to sift through when given the coordinates. I just zoomed out and scrolled over there. (And it seems like there's an even quicker 'Find' or 'Go To' for waypoint numbers, I just have a brainfart on that one just now...)

Here's the area at 2 nm zoom:

and at 1 nm zoom:

woodchuck_1mi.jpg

and, I wasn't sure if the little island group to the ESE was of interest, but here's that area at 1/2 nm zoom.

On my ExpeditionC, I've got 2 more levels of zoom, to 1/8 nm, but no additional mapping detail in this area, just bigger.

Hope that helps. (And hope there aren't a dozen FMers on your spot now when you get up there.) grin.gif

schweady,

I appreciate you taking the time to post copies of Rainy for me. The detail on the chip is extremely close to the detail on the paper maps. It's certainly close enough for me to make an investment in this chip. However, since Jeff from Navionics has just posted information on a new LOTW chip that includes Rainy I now have a new decision to make. I'm assuming the Rainy data on your chip will be identical to the new LOTW chip.

I hope you don't mind one last question. What software are you using to view your maps on your computer to make copies like you did for me? Does this software allow you to find waypoints for humps and reefs that you can upload to your on board electronics? I will be using a Lowrance 113 HD when they become available.

Thanks again.

blush.gif Sorry I didn't explain how I posted the images. They're just digital photos taken of my ExpeditionC's screen. crazy.gif

Yeah, the info Jeff posted makes me need (want) yet another chip, and I haven't been on LOTW in years. (Guess I'm just a map junkie...) Thing is, it's like the overlapping circles of the old Venn diagram: this new LOTW+2K chip has brand-new LOTW and Sakakawea data but only 33 of the 65 MN HD surveyed lakes that are already on the 2007 Premium North chip. I don't think it replaces the North chip at all, they just had some room on it after doing LOTW and Sakakawea. But if your lakes are on that list of 33, great.

schweady,

Thanks again for your response. Yep, I can relate to the Venn diagram thing. I haven't been on Rainy for about ten years, spent the last 9 years on LOTW. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the smallmouth fishing on Rainy will be good this year during the 4 week of June.

Nice chatting with you.

Jeff

I have a question in regards to the maps for LOTW and Rainy Lake. From the post I'm replying to you stated that "On the Navionics chart, you will get the entire LOTW system based on the official Govt. charts (US and Canada). Also, about 5000 additional lakes (Many in HD 1' contours), Rainy, massive Great Lakes coverage, yadayadayada."

I have used the paper Canadian Hydrographic Maps for years for both LOTW and Rainy Lake. When you say LOTW data is based on the official Government charts does that imply that the chip data is identical to the paper Canadian Hydrographic Maps for both LOTW and Rainy Lake?

I apologize for a dumb question. I don't know if the Canadian Hydro maps are the official government maps.

Thanks for your help.

The datasource is consistent for both LOTW and Rainy for non-survey areas. It is from our GOLD navigation products.

Sorry for my delay!

I've been looking for information on the nav. hd chips compatability with lowrance.

Can someone please explain the hotmaps vs. platinum lines...

Aren't the better maps the platinum line?

I have looked at the Navionics site and it seems to be indicating that the platinum line of hd maps is not compatible with lowrance products.

???

Jeff, can you shed some light on a couple questions, I have many customers asking when the new Kabetogama paper maps will be available, also any projections on doing a map survery on Namakan Lake. The new chip is awesome when you get used to it. Thanks

I'll echo guts's comments on the Kabetogama map, I used it over the week after the 4th and it was very accurate. I'll be back up on Kab/Nam for 15 of the next 21 days and will get alot more time to use it.

I also would be one to love to have an hd version of Namakan, there really isnt a good map out there right now. I've looked at just about all of the existing paper ones and they all have alot of missing data (although maybe that is a good thing, keeps a few of those small spots secret wink.gif

I am very happy with the product, it was my fist mapping purchase to date!
