Genz Rod Issues

Anyone have any problems with their Genz Rods warping? My brother took a rod out of his case this weekend and asked me if I had ever seen a rod do this. As I looked, the top 3 guides were twisted around. They weren't bent, and the rod wasn't broken, but as you looked down the rod, only 2 of the five guides lined up. Anyone else have any similar issues? It was like they shifted in the off season. I am stumped.

Now I know I'm not crazy. I had the exact same thing happen to me. I have 2 Genz Rods (last years gold series) and they both ended up exactly as you described when I pulled them out of my rod bag last week. I figured it was a some kind of fluke, something to do with the way I had them in there?? (even though i've done it the same way for two years and haven't had a problem with my other rods) at least I know I'm not crazy, now I wonder why they do that???

Just curious, exactly what rod did this happen to? I have a Gold Perch series rod that I stored in a rod case over the summer, and when I pulled it out a few weeks ago the rod had a permanent "bend" in it. It just wouldn't straighten out. I tried bending it back and it snapped off in my hand. I complained to Nature Vision and they sent me a brand new rod for free, so they took good care of me. I've been pretty careful to store the new rod with no tension on it. Is this similar to the problems you guys are having? I'd contact Nature Vision, I'm sure they'll take good care of you too.

I am not sure what rod it was. I just called my brother and he read me the model number. It was a GGZ2724. A 27 inch rod. I don't know if this helps or not. But it was definately a last years gold series model.

That's interesting, because my rod was a GGZ2746. Your brother's rod is also a perch rod, and the only difference is his was rated for 2-4 lb test while mine was rated for 4-6 lb test. I wonder if this problem is only on the perch series rods, or on all of them?

I bought two of the Genz silver series last year, SGZ2324 (crappie) and SGZ29610 (walleye). The walleye rod was stored in a Beckman rod case and the crappie rod was stored in the bottom of my ice house. I checked both of them over after reading this, and I can't find any flaws in either of them. They both performed great on the ice yesterday too...

He did say that his was a 2-4 lb rating. He couldn't tell me if it was a Perch model, but it sounds like you are pretty familiar with them. Did you use them for the first time last year, or have you had them before? Maybe it was just a bad batch last year. confused.gif

I don't think this is a problem with these rods specifically, I've had the same thing happen to other rods, and even my St. Croix Legend. I have no idea what would cause it? The "warping" on my Legend happened sitting on a shelf in the closet. It wasn't in a rod bag or anything. It was almost like the rod wanted to have a spiral wrap and was going to do anything to get there. smile.gif

To remedy this, I held the blank near the tip and carefully twisted it until all the guides lined up again.

I've got to admit, its the oddest thing I've ever seen.

This was the first Genz rod I've owned. I bought it on clearance towards the end of the season last year, so it only got used 3 or 4 times. I'm sure Nature Vision will replace any rod that had a defect like this. They replaced mine, no questions asked, so that makes me think that this might be a known problem.

Hanson, it sounds like your problem with the Legend is a bit different than the problem I had with my Genz rod. I don't think we're all having the same problem here either. We've just all had faulty Genz rods. My perch rod was permanently bent, I wish I would have taken a picture of it before it snapped off in my hand!

I've had it happen to other rods. I don't own any Genz rods so I can't comment there. I attributed it to storing them in my hot shed during the summer. Even though I was carefull to lay them all flat and make sure there was no bend in any of them for storage it still happend. Maybe it wasn't due to the heat. Hanson said his was stored in a closet so I would assume that it wouldn't get to 100 plus degrees like my shed probably did. Interesting thoughts now...... confused.gif

I agree. It is amazing that these "Freaks of Nature" are happening to many people. I could see how heat could affect rods. I know that those sheds can get hotter than a pistol at times, but one wouldn't think that in a garage with a vented roof it would get that hot. I don't know!!

Thanks Deitz for the grunt work!

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
