Dale Earnhardt Jr. in New York at the awards presentations had this to say when someone said that now that Jimmie has won the title and since Mark Martin isn't running full time, he might be the best driver without having a championship:

``It's quite a compliment,'' Earnhardt said. ``I ain't never been called the best driver in anything.

``I feel like, personally, I'm the best driver out there. I don't know, at the end my career, whether I'll get the true credit for how talented I am...''

OK, HUH? Did you all catch that second statement??? I am the best out there and I don't know if I'll ever get the credit for how great I am?!?!?!?!?!?!??? Holy cripes, seems this guy is believing too much of the hype about himself and forgetting to check on the reality of where he ranks against the likes of Gordon and Stewart and their SIX combined Cups for instance... Take a day off from the Budweiser Jr.!!!!!!

I believe a driver must have a ton of confidence, and being a Jr. fan I will agree that that is a pretty tall statement. After winning a few championships then maybe you could make a statement like that.

Thats a statement only a few can make and yes, that does include his father.

That second statement is definitely over the top. It's one thing to want to be the best, aspire to be the best, but it's another to think you are the best without yet proving it. It also seems that Jr. mis-interpreted what the person had said to him....."he might be the best driver out there without a cup". Obviously the bold words are the highlight of the statement...first, he "might" be...not is, but could possibly be.....second, "without" a cup, meaning the ones with a cup are better than he.

Sounds like he indulged in himself a little too much there.

I read that article too and was a little taken aback by that last comment. I can only surmise that he was meaning that he is the best driver but doesn't have the equipment and can drive a car better than most. I dunno. Things can be taken out of context too.

I suppose you could equate it to the Indianapolis Colts who have been the best team in the NFL without question the past few years but haven't won the championship yet.
