Coleman Lantern question

I have a Coleman 2 mantle lantern. (model 288-700) I have used it for years and do my own repairs. About 2 months ago it started "Popping" when I shut it off. It acts like it has the hic-ups. As soon as it does this, it blows a hole in the bottom of the mantle. I replace the entire valve assembly and the generator and it still does it. Anyone have any ideas???

It might be that the shut off valve is not closing completely/ thus letting a little vaporized fuel past in tiny bursts. Only thing I can think of.

My brother collects and repairs/restores Coleman lanterns. He said to check the screen in the pipe where you attach the mantle. Usually 'popping' is due to the screen missing or having a hole. Can also check the Old Town Coleman HSOforum, they have a trouble shooting area. Good Luck.
