tippin-ultimate fishing

A while back I went to Tennessee to visit some friends. One day we went out tippin.
for those who do not know what tippin is. it is basically catheing catfish with youre bare hands. They place metal boxes with the open end facing down streme. The catfish in turn go into these boxes to escape the current or to spawn. When you find a box with a cat in it you get it to bite youre hand once youre hand is inside the cats mouth you grab a hold to its lower lip with youre other hand. Using youre hand inside for leverage and youre other hand to hold onto the fish, you make youre way back to the boat and throw the cat in. I had one hell of a time, but don't get me wrong I still love the feeling of a big cat on the end of my fishing rod.

I was wondering is tippin legal in this state.

If so anyone want to try it with me when the water warms up.

I'm actually glad its not legal in MN. It would be fun to try though. The fact that noodling, jugging, trot lines, ect. are illegal in MN prbably adds greatly to the quality of fishing we experience here. There are some things that MN goes over board on though. One thing that drives me crazy is that we cannot use bluegills for bait on the Mississippi River. Or any other body of water. Our Wisconsin friends can use them on the Miss and anyone else in the country who purchases a WI license can, except us Minnesotans.

Never heard it called tippin before.I have always wanted to try it though. It is a little creepy sticking your hand in the snags and not knowing what the heck might be in there.Wouldn't want to loose a didgit to a gar or snapper. At least we don't have to deal with too many poisonous snakes.
There are a lot of techniques I have always wanted to try just once.Jugging sounds like great fun!Chasing bleach jugs all over the river would be a blast!
It is a good thing that most of these techniques are illegal.I don't know many guys who are harvesting any cats out of te water that I fish but a guy could do some damage in a hurry.

I would like to try it but not in the Minnesota and not during the spawn. I could see a smaller, cleaner running river maybe. I've heard some horror stories related to guys reaching around in the water looking for Cats.

I see where you are coming from and all I even agree to a certin extent. Some things should be illeagal, but some times it seams there is so many rules you do not even know
you are fishing illeagaly until after you get the fine.

Yup. Noodling, Trotlines, juglines, and other various types of unattened set lines are all illegal in this state. Personally I don't see the fun of just dragging a dead catfish in on the end of a set line that had been sitting there for several days...

I agree set lines and such should be illeagal there is no fun in it. Tippin is a blast and it is not like you are leaving a line out for days at a time.

Now I am in no way saying that I would like to see these things legalized but from what I understand of trotlining is that you set them in a series.after you are done setting them you then go back and check them very early in the morning.Any way that is how the DNR does it when studying populations.I think it would be great fun wrestling a cord that has half a dozen large cats on it.Sounds kinda sporting to me. smile.gif
I do not think it should be legal, but I would like to experiance it once in my life time, and I probably will.I will just have to go south to do it.
I did wrestle a cat with my hands to shore once.It got cought 4 miles up a creek. The water had gone down and there was no way that cat was getting back to the river before winter.I chased this cat around for over an hour in the pool she was stuck in and finaly got her. After weighing this 24lb flatty,I took her to the river to release her.Let me tell you it sas no easy feat catching that cat even in the small pool she was in.It was a blast though.
