Stupid carb

Ok I was a diesel mechanic for many years before I went into sales. During all those years I never had the nack or learned how to "hear" or tune a small engine carb correctly, I actaully used to pay a guy to dial in the small engine carbs for me. Needless to say I rebuilt the carb on the old Artic Cat and it runs nice without flooding any more but I want to make sure I have the air mixture screw set correctly. What is the proper method for setting the air mixture on a Mikuni single carb in front of a 500cc Suzuki motor. Is it RPMs, sound, smoke, x amount of turns then rpms?

Stupid carbs.

Mikuni carbs are dummy proof. Turn the idle speed screw in till you get an idle a bit faster then what you want. Next turn the idle air screw in till the engine starts to run rough. Next count the half turns and turn the idle air screw out till it runs rough again. In the process of turning the idle air screw out the engine with speed up and run smooth. You counted your turns, now put the idle air screw back in half the amount of turns. Set the idle speed back to where you want it.

Since were talking about Mikuni carbs. You don 't give them trottle when trying to start them.

I can make a diesel dance but give it two or less sparks plugs and a carb and I normaly fix it by replacement.

Jon, drop it off with Kelly and have him "fix it". When you pick it up bring an extra ski, track and suspension.

The idle speed screw is on the barrel. Its tapered and its position stops the slide. The idle mixture is lower and on the bulk of the carb body.

I can see him gently walking over to the welding bench and grabbing the 3lb hammer to "nudge" the carb a little.

I believe my air screw is on top of this unit. I only have two adjustable screws, the idle screw and what must be the idle mix.

I'll see if I can find a picture.
