Buck Puck...Deer Bait or Mineral Block??

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone knew the LEGAL answer to if a Buck Puck (sold locally at L & M and possibly elsewhere) is considered baiting or not? If you ask at the store they tell you, "no" & that it is a mineral block. I don't want to sound stupid by asking this question, but I strive to be an ethical hunter and was wondering if anyone else out there knows any information. Thanks!!

Ditto. The answer I got from the DNR in writing was anything food-related makes it bait. And food can mean liquid as well such as molasses. It doesn't have to be solid chunks. However, artificial flavoring is not considered a food. So you can get mineral licks with artificial fruit/corn/peanut butter, etc. flavoring in them. You just can't have actual food. Doubt a mineral lick will do much good now anyways. I'd definitely put them out next spring (March or maybe earlier) though as the deer used mine heavily last year and even when they're not using them in the fall, I think it helps to establish regular travel routes/meeting places.

Thanks for the info, both of you! I really appreciate it. I have not purchased one, but I think I will take your advice and, with a little more research, try to find something to start out with in the spring. I was surprised to see them being sold this time of year, but marketing is a key tool and I am sure they sold a lot of them! As far as the artificial flavor that is very interesting. Quite the fine line between artificial flavor and the real meal. I hope all others (that care) are cautious in their purchases!

Buck Pucks are an all-natural gourmet blend of tasty dehydrated vegetables, bodybuilding grains, minerals for antler growth, and vitamins to promote good health . . . with a splash of molasses for their sweet tooth

If you do a google search for BIGGER BUCK PUCK you will find these items. They are a food based product made here in MN.

I put one out this past summer, later in the season and had lots of hits on it. It seemed the longer the season went the more hits I got, as it rehydrated the puck, animals would visit it and pick at it.

Will try one again next year.

Mike
