anyone ever use buckshot instead of slugs for hunting deer?

are there any advantages to using buckshot over slugs? what is the effective killing range for buckshot? how do you know what size of shot to use, example 000, or 00 buckshot. and finally is it even legal to use buckshot for whitetails in minnesota? thanks in advance for any input guys.

Really close... 10-15 yds. I have shot coyotes with it and for that i wouldnt extend past 20-30. I dont even understand why you would use it in the first place. At close range nd in thick cover a slug is going to get you alot farther than 9 pellets. We shot a deer during muzzleloader a few years ago that had been shot with buckshot, couldnt tell until after it was skinned and noticed a few small holes. The meat was green where it was shot as well. Basically it would work ok as long as the pellets dont start to spread out. I would guess you would want every one of the pellets in the heart/lung area. But again i feel they are pointless except for close in coyotes and fox.
