Catman Manners

Ya this sounds like an oxymoron.
Last night while fishing a hole we ran into a couple of jokers(for lack of ability to post the words I would like!)We had jsut gotten a couple of runs and one fish when these two guys came motoring up and asked how the fishing had been.We answered politely with out giving away too much information. They then steered their rig right behind our boat to survey the hole on their sonar, coming within a couple boat lengths and directly over our baits on a couple of passes.Catfish especially flatheads are sensitive to any noise and comotion and it will shut down the bite!
#1 If there is someone fishing a hole..Its their hole untill they decide to leave.
#2Do not motor around the hole while some one is fishing it.Say hello and keep moving along the river.

Somepeoples kids! I tell ya!

I guess I would have had to say something to them....In a polite manner of course. Like "Hey buddy, Check my bait for me will ya?".

I do think that in most cases, Two or more boats can fish the same area if you know your head from your heel and use some common sense. Control your boat, control your casts and keep quiet.

I doubt I would have been that polite.....

Or you could have asked....

Do you like my cologne?

or

Hey I just had a motor stolen with that serial number.....

or

See that blip on your sonar screen......that's my bait.

or simply invite them over for a cut bait sandwich.

Hey fishhead.....I notice an access on the DNR site beneath 35W on the Minnesota. Do you know if this access is adequate to launch the big rig? I want to go cattin on Friday, but won't have access to the little boat. What's the most upstream access you'd feel comfortable launching your big rig at??

I hear there are some nice areas near the powerplant/blackdog area and that access under 35W is right there. What do ya think?

Guru...Thats a real nice ramp for any boat. You might consider going up to the Credit River inlet from there, or up a little further past Savage to Eagle Creek too.

Black Dog has two discharges...One right near 35W and the other further down towards the Cedar bridge....Watch the rocks out in front of these inlets!

Shakopee would be safe for a larger boat too and has a good ramp down under 101.

Thanks Dark.

I'll be out after work Friday till ??????

As long as the weather is cooperative. Not as worried about the rain in the big boat though......got the full canopy and side curtains. That don't help against lightning though.

Eddy,

....and I thought you were joking a couple weeks ago with the comments about the squeeling and dueling banjos. Doesn't that .60 caliber take up a lot of good fishing space on the boat????

Besides, I can tell ya that a well placed grenade or two would be the better answer......you might even stun a few fish to boot.

One thing I've learned though is that every fourth or fifth grenade, you gotta check your rivets. They tend to spring leaks from the shock wave.

If I had the money for the electronics....a little C-4 and a remote control speed boat would be the most effective......Could probably get away without the C-4......just tape a few road flares together and stick some wires in the ends. I think the visual effect of a remote control boat coming at 'em with some psuedo-dynamite could cause some spontaneous urination in anyone.

Ed, All you need is a good catapult or slingshot to fling your dead bait at um! grin.gif I know one thing....one piece of that stuff stuck to your forehead would get the message out in a hurry!eek!

Share a hole of not if you drop you anchor on my bait your not going to catch anything either! If I can cast to your boat I will share a hunk of bait and a sinker! And for heavens sake DO NOT motor around a guy who is fishing a spot especially any where near downstream of his bait.Catfish feed upstream!I would have thought this to be common sense!
The 35W launch is much better than the Shakopee one.I have been stuck on the Shakopee launch more than once.If you back down too far the pavement ends and your trailer gets hung up.I would only take a big boat upsteam to the spill way in Chaska.

So I'm down at the access tonight for a quickie. I'm a quite a few yards up from the ramp itself and here comes a brand new River Pro bookin downstream and swings around into the ramp. He drops off someone to get the truck and then he takes off upstream real close to the bank where I'm fishing from shore.

Trying hard to be polite when he got back to the trailer I says "wow! thats a pretty looking thang!" He says "ya! it goes right over logs!" I says "I bet! it went right over my line real good!"

Am I mean?

Fishhead and Dark,

Since I'll have the depthfinder, what type of structure should I be looking for? Are there some no-brainer spots between 35W and 101? I'm rigged for battle now.....got some 50 pound braided line for my main and some 30 pound mono for my leader. Now I'll probably snap the rod in half....

Got all my fish last week on frozen suckers that I get for free at the local bait shop.

Are you guys fishing the catfish league on Friday night?

I have one guy with me for Friday (same guy as last Friday). Do either of you guys want to join me on Friday? Fishing three shouldn't be too bad out of the big boat.

Grabs.....that invitation goes for you too.

Probably fish from 5 pm till 2 am or so.

Fishhead,

Just got off the phone with my buddy.....he can't get there till 6PM.

I can be there any time after 4.

Can you meet at 4 and you and I can hit a few spots before he gets there.

Also make sure I got the directions right.

35W to 106th East to Lyndale then south to the access????????

I think some one is playing backyard biologist.I have been fishing the river for 10 or so years now and have never seen one nor have I seen a 30lb channel. But I do believe that you know the difference.I am checking rays on my fish now.
Did you check the league standings? So far were on top for channels anyway. If you get another 30lb blue just pretend its a channel since they don't have a catagory for blues smile.gif
Oh Ya stuck in Canada?Ya that must really suck fishing everyday! smile.gif

Ya' know, it's really a drag when a patient, and thoughtful sportsmen, out on the water, or in the field, gets dumped on by some yahoo who could care less about his/her fellow outdoorsman.
I, for one, consider myself kind of a purist. I'll always take the simplest method over the most technical, the less expensive over the top of the line, and I'm never afraid to get my hands, or feet, dirty while in the pursuit of game. So many folks have lost touch with what's at the core of hunting and fishing!
It just shouldn't ever be a competition for the "best" or the "most". Too many folks have forgotten their manners in lieu of immediate gratification. And the "nice" people out there pay the price for these "others" indiscretions.
I just shake my head when guys in the next field are shooting at geese that are setting in to my decoy spread. Or three other boats wedge in close enough to ya' to monitor your bodily functions, on a body of water big enough to hold most of the greater metropolitin area, just cause you landed a couple shaker walleyes. Or somebody runs over your set line on the river when they can clearly see you are fishing there.
These people won't learn.. They can't! They were raised in that culture, and it would take a divine intervention to change them.
The scripture tells us, "If your enemy is thirsty, give them a drink. If your enemy is hungry, give them something to eat. In doing so you will heap hot coals upon their brow, and you will be rewarded in the end".
I know it's frustrating, but it's the right thing to do.
And if that doesn't make them go away, then I wouldn't hesitate to pull out the flamethrower and cook them like fat wood ticks in a campfire!

Hey Fishead,
I haven't checked the standings, but I'm glad to here about the standings. If you ever want to see a 30lb channel just let me know One of my old professors has a picture of two that were 28 and 29 on the Mississippi in Minneapolis. The one that I caught a few years ago was right around there and I hope to see him agian. I will take you to that spot sometime.
Well, back to Canada. I will be back on the tenth and I will give you a call about the cat league.
