Rumor has it that Joel Nelson shot a fine doe this am.Joel,lets here the story buddy.

Nothing special, just a tender 1-2 yr. old doe for the freezer. I get a bit itchy this time of year when deer meat has run out, and I have yet to tag a doe before gun season. I'll get another one usually during gun season, then help our party out with meat. Ever since we've been trying to do some QDM on our land, we've had more venison, which is a good thing.

Deer are simply backstraps on legs to myself. Now turkey, man, that's where it's at!!!

I digress.

With the weather turning, and deer moving heavily at night in our area, I figured I'd hunt a new stand with a good wind. The morning (twilight I should say) started with a racoon. Then a monster deer, right under my stand. I couldn't see rack, could hardly see anything but its outline. Frustrating!!!

1/2 hour later, mother and a fawn came in behind me, of course. After twisting, contorting, and making way too much noise, both deer stopped, I drew, and sailed a shot over the doe's back. How? Came to find my arrow hit twig. Ruined my stinkin' lumenock too....bummer.

Now with the first shot jitters past me , I nocked another one, drew quickly, and let her have it. Heard a solid "thunk," which has meant breadbasket for me in the past....though the hit looked a bit low and back. Gave her an hour just in case.

Got down from the stand, blew her out of her bed no more than 15 yards past where I hit her. She bounded out, but the blood was full of good deep red blood, as was her exit trail.

Called Tom up for a pep talk and a bit of woods wisdom, he advised to back off as I was thinking on doing. In the past I've lost deer like this (gun and bow), and she was bleeding too much to loose!

Head back to the home farm, and my old man was asking questions....too many questions. Where about did you shoot it? Where did it head to? This was going in a bad place fast.

Sure enough, the deer I was giving time to bed down and die was found by my dad, covertly, an hour later. Just couldn't handle it. Had to get up there......with the tractor, tear around.....stumble around, not following any blood trail......throw it in the loader and bring it down to the farm to clean-up.

The deer ended up 100 yards from where I jumped it as bigbucks stated. I think it was my 8th bow-kill, and it'll taste great.

Its great you got the deer.I stayed by the phone and was waiting for the call that you found it.Being hit where it was I didnt think it would travel just to far.Congrats on the deer buddy.

Bow kills are special and will always be.
