Red lake suggestions/Info?

Ok, looks like a buddy and I are going to head up to Red lake either in January or Febuary. It'll be a mid-week trip (tuesday-friday or something). My current plan was to head up on a Tuesday night and arriving around 10pm or so. Crash in the fish-house near shore on the lake, then wednesday morning head out and find a spot to fish.

Never been to Red, so I dont know a thing about it. Where should I enter? Is it possible to just 'camp' right off the landing? Or is it possible to head right on out during the night and 'camp'?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I would go out of Rogers or Hillmans, just pay for the road pass and go, red lake is prety much bounce untill you find them, If I were you, get out on the ice find a place to pull in off the road for the night 20-50 yards make sure you are out 1 1/2 mile at least 9ft-12ft just for the night, and move the next day if need be,

Last year we did this and we had walleyes up the a$$ all night long C&R. There were cars drving by 100 ft away but as a rule of thumb get away from the crowds the next day and find a spot that looks good, Have fun man.

same suggestions, but i would head out at least 3-5 miles. you will feel like you are in canada. it is easy to find your way becaseu the resort road is one maine highway, then just have perpendicular paths off of it to put your house on. we also had our be3st fishing whe we got up there late and they started hitting like crazy after 1am. so i would head up and out, fish throgh the night, and sleep in the morning! its a blast! good luck!

I had much better luck last winter on the North side of the lake using Hillman's access. The access is actually on the east side of the lake in the town of Waskish and then head out 5,6,7 miles or however far you feel like.

If you are planning on arriving late, 10pm or so, the resorts won't be open. I usually just head on out onto the lake and head back in first thing in the morning to pay for my road pass.

Whatever you do, get yourself off of the road with your drop axle shack. There will be roads plowed all over the place so you should be able to find a place to camp where you won't be in the way.

Watch the Upper Red Lake forum this winter for reports, ice conditions, and snow conditions. Its looking like I'll be up there 5-6 weekends again this winter. Yikes!

Also remember that the URL Slabfest Get-Together is February 24th. Last winter, we all met at my permanent shack and then headed out as a group to find crappies and we did alright. I'm not sure where everyone will meet this winter yet, I have yet to decide.

Are you planning on having your shack out of Rogers again this year?

Yep. Its there and all ready to go. Just have to give Jerry the call to pull it out. Of course there is that little problem of needing some ice too. smile.gif

I think I paid $100 for summer storage. That includes a pull on & off the ice as well.

Thanks for the compliments on the site. I've been a little busy to update it lately so I'm really missing some good stuff on there.

Thanks for the replies, now I have another question.

I believe it's illegal to fry fish up in a fish house or on the lake, if there is a slot on the lake. IF so, and you are on a longer trip, how do you enjoy a fresh fish meal? Pull your fish house off the lake and cook em up?

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
