How do I keep livewell pump from freezing?

Gadgetman

Question

I have a Lund ProV and last year one of my live well pumps froze and cracked. Actually it wasnt the pump itself but the valve that switches from fill to drain to recirculate. What position should that be in to keep it from freezing again? Turned out to be a small blessing because when I put the new valve in, it now operates smooth as silk instead of having to grit my teeth to move from one position to another

I leave it in the nuetral position, and then blow compressed air from the livewell back towards the drain until the water stops coming out.

I did this a few times this summer when I had some sand/debris issues. The compressed air pushed out the remaining water in the lines.

Put RV antifreeze into livewells and let it drain, switch the valve so it will circulate.

Otherwise you can connect a hose on back of boat and feed RV antifreeze while pumps are running, it will circulate it thorughout the system.
