Snow Shoes

I've been researching snowshoes. I'm looking to hike around the woods in Northern MN. I'm only interested the metal frame styles. Atlas seems to be a quality shoe. Any information or recommendations you can provide would be appreciated. Also what type of boot, clothing and poles should I buy.

I've had a pair of Altas snowshoes for a few years now. They work great. They are an older style with the strap bindings. I would be a little weary of the ratchet style bindings, I just don't think their ease of use would be all that good. Just my opinion. I like the straps. Make sure to get the right size (weight support). If you plan on hiking/camping and will be carrying a pack, you'll have to consider the extra weight. If not, just match to body weight. I don't bother with poles. Depending on how cold it is, I'll use heavy duty hiking boots with thick socks. I don't like using pack boots, not the best for lots of walking. Gaiters are a must. Hope this helps.

I have Atlas and have had no problems with them at all. I always use my mukluks so I don't need gaiters, but I would agree, if you use normal length boots, you should get gaiters. I don't use poles either. And I do have the rachet type bindings and I haven't had any problems with those either.

The type I did have problems with were the Cabelas Alaskan model. They are the green metal framed ones you see in the catalog. On my 4th trip out a rivet popped on the right shoe. Brought them back, got a new pair, on the 3rd trip out, popped a rivet on the right shoe! Brought them back and told them I don't want to see those green things again. That's when they gave me the Atlas shoes. It's been good since. Oh and by the way, the customer service at Cabelas was SUPER. They replaced them both times no questions asked. Just had a problem with the shoe.

I have some Redfeather shoes and they have worked well for me.
