Mr. Nailz
I just got done spreading dirt around my new construction. Can I seed now or should I wait till just before the snow?
zent
Mr. NailzI am by no means an expert, but I can tell you I seeded some areas of my lawn where I brought new black dirt into about a week ago and today I have new grass starting to push up. I would think this time of year would be good.Good luck, Zent
harvey lee
I spot seeded my lawn today and that should come up within 10 days. The amount of time it takes to come up will depend on the variety you used. The days are starting to get cooler and the nights also. One very important factor for seeding this time of year is the temp of your soil as it still needs to be warm.It is easier to water the new lawn also by doing it late summer or early fall and weed control is not near the problem.I would say if you are going to do it to get to it this week. The concern I might have as it is later in the season for seeding is you could recieve a hard frost at any time and lose your seeding.Small spots I dont mind if I have to by chance reseed, but a whole lawn might be a different story. This also will depend on where you are located in Minnesota as the northern region may be to late.
lawdog
We recently built an addition on and put in new septic all of which needs grass planted still. My lawn guy just talked me out of it last week, saying we'd be better now to dormant seed in November or early seed in April.I thought I could still get it done but he was definitely not enthused about trying it. LABS4ME
We are still actively seeding right now and will be for another week - 10 days. We do this as one of our services and stand by our work, so if we thought their was a high chance of failure, we'd not be out doing new lawns...Good Luck!Ken
Markley
Do a Google search for lawn calendar Minnesota. It is the second one at sustland HSOforum. If you do it today you should be ok.
Mr. Nailz
So if I can't get it done in the next few days then I will wait. Then the question becomes, how do you dormant seed? Is it a different type of seed or do you just treat it differently? Thanks again.

LABS4ME
Yeah, I usually go to it every other year... so I guess this year would be the year. I only go one of the three days... usually the middle one. If you're going, shoot me a post and we can meet up.Good Luck!Ken
Big Roy
Mr Nailz, Dormant seeding is when you plant grass seed late in fall so it will stay dormant until spring, over the winter the seed will settle into the ground, any grass seed will work. Some people have had mixed results so your mileage may differ. I am going to try it this fall and I will post my results next year.
