Insulating the floor

I need some input here.

I hear from lots of people that you have to insulate your wheel house floor or it will be cold. I have had my fishhouse for 5 years now and I do not have an insulated floor. It has never been cold and I walk around sock foot all the time.

Regardless of outside temp my floor is never cold and I have never burned more then 4 lbs. of propane per day to heat the house. I imagine this is partly due to having a circulating fan.

So why would you add cost and weight to your wheel house by insulating the floor? Am I missing something here?

LTH the only thing that I could think about would be moisture problems. My floor is not insulated either and what I did was Thompson water sealed both sides then used an auto motive undercoating to prevent any water damage. I've also herd of guys using truck bed liner stuff under the whole bottom of the house to protect from water damage and freezing down.

I had the floor insulated in my last house and it sat right down on the ice. When there's no snow up on Lake of the Woods and its below zero with the wind howling, I notice the floor area tended to be definitly colder. I also had 10-12 holes open though too. I insulated my new house with even more insulation, and added teflon backer to protect it. It only makes sense to insulate all of it if your going to heat it IMO.

Just this last weekend I insulated my floor.

I used 2" foam. The cost was about $150 and the additional weight was about 30LBS. It took me and one of my sons about 5 hours to install (glued and screwed).

I also have all of my catch covers filled with Great Stuff foam.

Often we get out on ice with little to no snow to bank the house. Or just bouncing around and dont take the time to bank. While mine sits down right on the ice some wind still manages to get under the house and the insulted floor makes the difference.

A great way to go is to have the underside of the floor spray foamed. A buddy of mine is having his done by Jay Soderbloom in Cromwell. The spray foam not only insulates but also water proofs the floor. It adds very very little weight.
