I'm sure pups were part of it, but above and beyond that, timber wolves just flat don't like domestic dogs. When I was in Alaska, sled dogs were kept on an island during the summer, partly to keep the wolves away.

If you're interested in wolves and ever want to read two great books about them, go find 'Of Wolves and Men' by Barry Lopez, and 'The Ninemile Wolves' by Rick Bass. The Lopez book is sort of a history of human relations with wolves, and the Bass book is about the reintroduction of wolves to parts of Montana... Both great books.
