First timer needs advice on Muskie fishing Sabaskong Bay

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster on this board. First I just want to say that I think this board is an awsome place to read for helpfull tips and advice. I can't tell you how much I have learned just from reading some of your post. As far as my question goes, a friend and I are heading up to NW Bay on Rainy for our annual week of fishing the last week here in Sept. This year we decided we would take a day and drive over to LOW by Morson, (as advised by the guide at Birch Point Camp), and muskie fish Sabaskong Bay and the surronding areas. This is our first time targeting muskies and our first time to LOW. I do have a map of that area but need some helpfull hints of areas to try that time of year and what baits to throw or troll and what colors work best? If we troll how deep should we run? Will the fish be adjacent to deeper water and off points? Or are they still near shallower weed bedded bays? Is this a good time of year to catch a monster? I am guessing that water temp. will be a key factor in the fish's location. Any helpfull tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the concern there cjac, I am still actually considering a guide, but just in case we don't go that route I had better get all the info I can. Like I said we have a good map chart and that shows alot of the dangerous areas to avoid and we have fished similar areas on Rainy for years. I know one thing is for sure I wont be buzzing by any of the marker bouys at high speeds my first time out there wink.gif If anyone has any knowledge to my previous questions and might know of a good guide, I would love to hear from you. Thanks again.

A good article in Essox Magazine (this issue) about the fall bite on LOTW from Doug Johnson --big time guide on LOTW.

One excellent musky guide at a very reasonable price is Lenny out of Red Wing Lodge. When I go up there for a week every July, I take him out twice even though I know the water very well now.

I don't have a lot of experience on LOTW at this time of year, so I will reserve comment. The only thing I will say is that it has been very good fishing up there this year.

A recent post in the Musky Hunter Chat room

Ruff fish

Just got back from LOTW on Sept. 1...we caught 27 between 3 of us in a week. Of the 27, 21 were caught on BLK/ORG spinnerbaits,2 on a top raider, and 4 on a reef hawg Chart/black dots. brought a few up on bulldawgs. Talked to some other guys and they ended up with 14, half came on bulldawgs and the rest came on spinnerbaits and Chart/black dots mantas. I dont know where you are heading on LOTW, but i would suggest spinnerbaits for sure if your fishing out of the Morson area.

We just returned from Red Wing Lodge from a week of fishing and it has been slow. An algae bloom has made visibilty a problem, often times less than a foot, there were two other groups there besides us and, two parties of two, and we had three, a total 14 fish were boated for all the groups with all but 2 under 40 inches. Weather and water clarity played a major role. We saw some big fish and had two hooked up boatside that were maybe upper 40's. Missed a few more to boot, follows were difficult to spot. Finding clearer water was the key. Talking to some of the guys it seemed that the best luck came from the North around Miles Bay, Obabikon bay and Obabikon Lake. Most fish came off rock. Points, small islands seemed to hold the most fish. This is world class water and can kick out the fish no doubt, but just like anything timing is the key. The water is way down from normal too...
