new sonar user looking for advice on how to understand what I am looking at

My boat came with a humminbird matrix 67 sonar and I would like to learn more about what I am looking at on the screen when I am fishing (bottom composition,fish, baitfish,....) Anyone know of a good book or guide?

Not sure about humminbirds but the one that came with my Eagle is terrible. They mostly just keep repeating "until you learn how to understand what you are seeing".

About 2 years ago I received a sonar manual that describes how they work. It is pretty technical and very informative and is based on lowrance fish finders. The file was sent to me from a guy on Iboats. The file is about 3 megs and if anyone is interested I can send it to you if you email me at [email protected].

I got mine but what kind of a file is it and what program do I need to open it with?

microsoft word however microsoft works or any word processor should open it. I just tried word pad and that will convert it and open it as well.

Even though you don't have a Lowrance, there is a sonar tutorial on their HSOforum that can help you understand the settings (which are common on all locators such as gain, gray scale, etc). It's very good.

First tip: Turn of the "Fish ID" option......the one that shows all the little fishies on your screen.
