Bass Fishing for Musky

I was using a Poe’s 7.5” Giant Jackpot topwater lure in black/sliver colors.

I love it. You flat out never really know what your going to catch. I saw the boil and the fish took off running downstream. I couldn’t reel fast enough and when I caught up with it, it was downstream in decent current, so the fight was on. I was hoping small musky, but thinking it was a smaller pike. Well, wouldn’t you know….

Yes tyler i have heard of that happening several times to several guys. that is a very nice fish. And i think by the bit of scenery i may have a clue where that might be as well. If it is where i am thinking it is supprising that it wasn't a musky and was a largie. Nice fish man. ike

I tried my best to not give any location away. I cropped and even modified one of the pics a bit.

Ike's a man on top of things in the Rochester area, and given I mentioned the word musky its not surprising that somebody could find the exact rock I was standing on.

I think Ike has formulated his prediction from more than just these pictures and I’ve got a sneaky feeling that he’s right.

no worries tyler and yes the fact that you said musky had a bunch to do with it however if it is where i am thinking your secret is safe even though it isn't much of a secret and who knows i could be way off too. If it is the spot i am thinking I don't get out there too much just cause of sheer laziness i guess. Best of luck and keep those pictures coming wink.gif and maybe we should get together and trade some secrets. ike

I've caught a number of dandy smallmouth while pitching for muskys. A frog colored cisco kid took my biggest smallie, a plump 21" fish. Kind of neat to get these bonus fish. The next Minnesota record smallmouth may well be landed by a musky guy.

Hiya -

Yeah, you catch a lot of wierd stuff on muskie lures. Lotsa bass on topwaters for sure. Especially smallies. I just wish smallouth would teach muskies how to hit topwaters. Smallies never miss the things, and muskies miss all the time. Also caught many, many big walleyes on muskie lures. I have some hardcore walleye head friends, and I tell them all the time that if they knew how often 8-10 pound walleyes hit muskie jerkbaits, they'd cry. Just last week a friend of mine was muskie fishing on Mille Lacs while the PWT Super Pro was going on. He and Mark Martin pulled up on a reef at the same time, and Martin asked if they were planning on fishing it. They said, yeah, but we're muskie fishing, so Martin dropped his anchor and was rigging up a slip bobber. My friend takes one cast with a 10" jerkbait, and catches an 8 lb walleye... Martin just laughed...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm
