Probably because it's easier to access. It's not much fun trying to tie/untie a drift sock with big waves splashing in your face! grin.gif I'm also sure it's so you see it or have a better chance of seeing it, so you don't put the hammer down with it still there? I know I'm not the only one to forget the drift sock out. shocked.gif

That's my thinking behind it.

Maybe if you stil have the trolling motor down, it's not as likely to catch?? I suppose some guys will just run back up to the start of the drift with the motor, although I suppose that if it's windy enough that you need the sock, that you're going to have to have one heck of a trolling motor to run back up through those waves, pulling the sock??
