Hanging vs. Ground Bait

Recommended Posts

We use to hang it in gunny sacks but we are trying to keep cost down since we have 7 sites to maintain so we are doing pits this year. The bags were nice because you definately know it is a bear but with the logs we have this year it will take a bear to move it.

I use to hang my baits and that is ok. I don't like having to put up a new bag every other day. So I went to making wooden cribs. I use heavy logs that coons can't move. I place them at the base of a tree. I make the crib high next to the tree and make it shorter in height farther out. This makes the bear turn broadside from me and his head is covered when I draw my bow, but his vital are still open for the shot. If this makes any sense.

Good luck

Kyle

Thats an interesting crib. I make mine in a lincoln log fashion with the first two logs running parrallel 12" dia. an 5' long. I chainsaw deep notches on either end of both to lay two more across the same size as the first two. inside the crib I'll cut two in more a little shorter to lay in side against the ones laying in the notches on either end, then I take the the notch I cut out from the first two logs an wedge those against the shorter ones againts the frame to prevent scooping. Then I cut to size to fill in the crib. A bear really has to work to get in to the sunday treat I have waiting for him. Sounds like alot of work but not really. Good luck this year. Later Boar

Wow Sunday bait huh? You think it will take that long to get him?

I use pits as well. I just cut them 6 feet long and make a box and place heavy cover logs over the top. If there is a depression in the ground I use it or dig down a little and put the dirt around the edges. We will be using hanging baits for test baits.

Not sure what to put in them yet though.

A box is pretty much what I make I just have a tendency to over describe therefore in the end I dont even know what I'm talking about, Ha. My sunday bait is pretty much just that, a small pile of doghnuts, some blueberries an cream pellet mix a little cheap brand dog food, an a burnt honey syrup for a topper, Oh myyyyyy. I think I'll have one. Later boar.
