slick2526
since i see that people do like the 1187's on this site I will ask my original question now. What choke and brand of ammo/size do you use for goose hunting. I only bought the 3" also with the 28in barrel. I have been looking at kent tungsten-matrix and also rem hevi-shot. I guess the price really is not that important to me since i do not get out that often i want something that will knockum dead up to 50-60yd range. any suggestions appreciated. monstermoose78
50-60 yards get the rifle out. Not saying it cant be done but thats a long ways away even with the lead thats a poke. I would wait until the are a bit closer and that way you dont have to worry about it as much. 3 inch shells are just as good as 3 1/2 you dont get that much more shot with big loads. For choke i think you need to have Full if thats the range you want to shoot geese at. Geese aren't that hard to get with in 50 yards and that way you know your going to kill them instead of crippling them.
mechanictim
I agree with monstermoose78, no need for shooting at geese at 50 to 60 yards.(unless you are shooting at a bird you just hit but didn't drop.) As for the best type of load and choke, first try the factory full choke and experiment on a patterning target at 40 yards with a couple of the loads you are considering. Look for a load that has an even pellet dispersion inside a 30 inch cicle. A real tight pattern at the center of the patterning target may be good for tukeys but not so much for flying birds. If your patterns have holes in them or are too tight in the center of the target, try the same load with a factory Modified choke before giving up on that load. If after trying the factory choke you are not getting a good pattern then try one of the after market chokes.
Bauer and Standke
I agree there is absolutly no reason to be shooting at birds that far out if you cant get them closer then that, you are scareing them with the call or you decoys are not set right. But as for chokes and ammo I love Kent ammo but all guns shoot a little different just get out and take some shots at a target to see what works the best. Swamp Scooter
Full choke with steel?? Doesn't it say on teh tubes to NOT use steel shot with the full tubes? Go with the modified choke and then get a decent decoy and call and camo. Loads I use in the 3" would be #2 for ducks and BB for geese. 50 yards is a poke if you have not tenderized and dropped a leg or blasted wings already. Kent and Federal have never donw me wrong. carpshooterdeluxe
Waterfowl Hunter magazines new issue contains a really informative article about remingtons new hd series of non toxic shot and goes into good detail about patterning for this specific load. looks to be a legitamate 60 yard goose killer. personally i like to know that the load im shooting patterns good and has lethality out to 60 yards; it gives me that much more confidence to take those birds if they are all of the sudden flaring as they get above my 40 yard marker decoy.
