On Board Charger

lawman

Question

I have a Guest brand 10 amp, 2 bank charger on my boat. I have used it for 5 years now. My batteries are new this year. I have noticed that lately it charges at full output for only an hour before the indicator lights tells me the batts are fully charged. They are not charged at this point. If I unplug the unit and replug it in it will put out about 4 amps or so. The other day it shut down completely after an hour of charging. Time for a new one?

Something is definetly not right. If it were me I'd just trot on out and buy a new one. A guy can drive himself nuts sometimes on some of these boat/electrical things and believe me, life is TOO short. I say junk it and get a new one.

I agree with Ufatz, onboard chargers are not too expensive anymore, you might be better replacing and maybe avoid other complications like overheating or electrcal shorts.

I had customer buying some non working models I had here which were screwed sealed (instead of glued sealed), they opened them, replaced few components and get them to work again, but if you dont' know what you are doing it will cost you more than a new one.

PS I'm in same position as you, I don't know how to fix them, so I buy new.... wink.gif
