handheld gps and map chips

soldoncass

Question

I hear about the lakemaster chip you can plug into some gps's. That sounds great to have in the future, but what would work for now? I have an Etrex Legend handheld gps and paper lake maps to find my way around now. I'm wondering if anyone has a Lakemaster chip with 1' depths and can locate spots you want to try on the lake, with coordinates?

Just punch them into the handheld at home to take with you?

Is that posible? Anyone doing it?

Thanks confused.gif

I too have the "archaic" (sp?) Etrex Legend. And yes, just like the top dollar hardwired GPS on the boat, you can now do the same with the handhelds. Someday I will talk the better half into letting me have one. Why wouldnt she let me? I need it for ice fishing of course wink.gif For now live with what you have, or drop the greenbacks and upgrade. Check the Garmin site for update possibilities. I need to do that myself.

Sure, you can use a straight edge on a map and trianglate a position along with a calculator, enter it into your gps and maybe be within a couple hundred yards, but to know where you are at any given time, cough up a couple hundred bucks and update. Good luck

During my college summers, well before GPS, I guided canoe trips in the BWCA/Quetico with only a paper map and compass. It can certainly be done because I did it, but finding that one special fishing hot spot again and again....GPS all the way. Plus, I wouldnt say that my Etrex is that far off, but now that I have a Lowrance 111CHD in the boat....wonder where that Garmin went to?, oh well grin.gif
