Question

I have a 40 hp merc with tilt and trim, but when i use the button on the motor it sometimes does'nt want to come down, so i have to bring it back up a couple of times then it usually will come back down, it makes a click noise once? [no movement] this happens occasionally, same with the foot buttons, is their any way to manually drop the motor so i dont get stranded in no mans water? appeciate any info, thanx.

I had the same thing happen on my Suzuki. I found that the connections on the trim/tilt solenoids (there is one solenoid for each direction on the Suzuki) were loose. Sorry I cannot tell you where the solenoids are located on your motor but they should not be too hard to find, just listen or feel for the clicks. If the connections are tight, then it may be that the solenoid has internal corrosion and you may need a new one. Hope this helps.

There are two trim and tilt solenoids on your motor which are typically located on the RH side of the motor under a black plastic cover you'll need to pull off.

In regard to manually lowering the motor there should be a flat head screw on the left hand side of your motor mounting bracket (the part that sits outside the water that is mounted to the transom) that you can loosen and manually lower the motor.

What I would do is to locate the solenoids and switch them (they're the same solenoid, as previously mentioned one is up and one is down) and if the problem then becomes that you can't raise the motor you know the solenoid is bad. Get a new one from a dealer and you'll be set. It's a pretty easy repair.

Had the exact same problem with my '99 60HP Merc. Had to bring it up a little and then it would engage and go down.

There are two relays that you should be able to see after removing the engine cover...one for up and one for down. Mine were behind the engine near the sparkplugs on the horizontal surface/deck. A screw or two holds them in place. They are out in the open...look for two small, black cubes with some wires. Simple and cheap fix. I did them both at the same time just to start fresh.
