Bullies

I have a buddy getting bullies for me in all sizes.Is there any use for those smaller 4.5-5.5 inchers.I figured I would keep the 6+,but he also brought along approx another 35- 5 inchers.Will those dinks catch flatties?

I would have no problem using the little dinks for the flatties. Dtro caught his big 54 on a 4" bullie. As long as they are active, they will attract fish. Who knows maybe one of the rough fish( walleyes) will take it for lunch.

Thats what I wanted to here as He gave me approx 4-5 dozen today and said he will get me some more bigger ones.Looks like all I have to do now is go fishing.

Thanks! That 5gal bucket had about 60 bullheads in it. When my buddy dumped out the water to replace it, it was about 3gal bullheads and 2gal water!!!

That is a cool picture. Kind of reminds me of those little fishing games where the fish go aroound in a circle and open their mouths once in a while. You have to get your magnet in the mought to catch them!

how do you guys keep your bullies to use as live bait. how long can you keep 60 in a 5 gal. bucket.

You cant keep 60 in a 5gal bucket for long! We only used that while out catching them and to transport them home and then into a larger bait tank. I often keep 12-18 bullies in a 5gal bucket for about a week. Just have to have a good airator. I use a bubbler and a side mount fish tank filter. The filter isnt really so much for filtering but it just another way to get air into the water and to keep the water circulating a bit. Its a good idea to change the water every other day and store them in a cool area.

I use an old power head pump and a big cooler. The water can get a little warm with the lid shut, but as long as the pump is spraying water on top, it is fine. Don't submerge it, because that won't get as much oxygen as spraying the surface will. If I shut it off, it doesn't take long for them to start looking stressed, but if I keep it on they are very feisty. If I didn't live in an apartment, I'd keep the lid open.

Has anybody kept bullies for a long time? I assume you'd have to change the water every 3 to 4 days. I would think that throwing small crappie minnows in there would keep them well fed? Other food such as earth worms might get messy and the minnows would stay alive until eaten? I may need info for future reference.

I know some people use corn to feed them but we have kept bullies for a couple fo weeks without feeding them withoout any ill effect. Them bullies sure are hardy lil things!

how much can a guy get a cheap aerator for and where?

I used a small bilge pump and some plastic hose, cut some holes in the hose and plug the end and you have your areator. Shouldn't cost more that $15-20

You can get an aquarium type air pump w/ hose and airstones for less than $20. Wal-Mart is not a bad place to get one or any pet store. With water changes every other day, I've kept 30-40 nice bullies alive for a few weeks with no feeding. They would have probably lasted longer but they got used up for bait. Time to restock!

Yard sales are also good places to pick up cheap pumps.
