Trout streams.

Hi Benson, welcome to FM!

There aren't too many options around St. Cloud, but I understand there are a couple streams that are technically supposed to hold some trout in that neighborhood. There's some talk about the Straight River on this board too, that's at least closer to you than the Arrowhead or Southern Minnesota.

You've got some great warmwater fly fishing opportunities around there, including the Mississippi for smallmouth. smile.gif

I'm mostly familiar with SE MN trout fishing, so maybe someone else will chime in with options that you might be able to check out closest to you. There aren't many though...

Benson,

Never tried flyfishing, but had some good times with the Girlfriend, now wife, out there. Go out to the Quaries, bring a backpack with your stuff and a lunch a give it a try. They post the ones that have trout in them. Never got a lot, but would get some once in a while. Otherwise, I'd be trying for some carp below the dam. They're a blast with spinning gear, I could just imagine them on a flyrod. Good luck.

Dont get too frustrated being a beginner on a trout stream. I remember when I first started flyfishing streams years ago and between the windknots, incorrect flies, and back casts getting into the brush every other cast it can be frustrating, but so very rewarding when you get that first trout out of a stream. I prefere stillwater fishing myself, but lakes is a whole nother nut to crack as far as figuring out where the fish are and what to use. I think the key to being successful at flyfishing is just enjoying what you are doing and enjoying the beautiful places trout live. Good luck, be patient and practice practice practice! grin.gif
