CNY Tim
Slowpitch - A guy was called out last night for this, was the ump correct? Runner on 1st base and one out. The batter hit's a lazy fly ball to deep right field and the runner off first move 1/3 of the way towards second. The right fielder drops the ball while the batter over ran the runner that was off 1st base by about 12 feet. The umpire immediately stops play and calls the guy whom batted the ball out and the runner that was on 1st had to go back to first. The first time I had ever seen that. nofishfisherman
Don't know the offical wording of the rule but you can not over run a base runner in front of you. Don't know if I have ever seen it actually happen so I don't know the exact ruling on who would be out but the ruling sounds about right to me. Stratosman
He was right, you may not pass up the runner in front of you under any circumstances.

Failin'onPhalen
I think the ump may have jumped-the-gun. In baseball, you haven't officially "over-run" the baserunner until you have tagged the next base...so, if the hitter and runner were in the first to second baseline, regardless of order, they are legal. The instant the hitter tags a base ahead of the runner, the runner is out. Softball rules may be different, especially in the area of base-running (to protect us old guys from injuries).Failin'
Caesarfishinguytoo
The runner that hit the ball is out. As far as baseball is concerned I know in the Major Leagues the same rule applies. As soon as the runner behind passes the runner in front he is considered out regardless if a base has been touched or not.7.08 Any runner is out when -- h) He passes a preceding runner before such runner is out. This exact rule applies to softball.
