55# trolling motor for 16.5ft alumacraft

davidr

Question

Hello, from what i have read on here bigger is better...problem is I dont want to run 24 volt trolling motor..mostly cause i only have room for 1 trolling motor battery. First question, is a 55# thrust trolling motor big enough for 16.5ft alumacraft throphy sport ? I do fish big water, but not weekly. Second, is it ok to wire your motor battery in series with the trolling battery to get 24vdc ? would hate to not start sitting in the middle of leech.

I have a alumacraft toury pro 175. When I looked at getting a bow mount, everyone I talked to said go as big as possible. Pocket book only allowed me to get a 55#. I wired two batteries parallel to it. Has plenty of power, even in windy conditions. With two batteries, I can run 6-10 hrs depending on how high I run it. With one bat, you should get 4-6 hrs (guessing). Big is nice, but you can definately get by with a 55#. My 2 cents...

With the 55# I can get 8-10 hours sometimes more, on one battery bass fishing, if you can play the wind you only have to adjust every now and then. I have a 16 ft sylvan.

I want to buy another battery, and hook them up in parrallel, (I need someone to buy a topper in the other forum first) wink.gif

U should be OK most of the time unless u are in very very strong current or strong wind. But it should work pretty well even on the Mississippi in the spring. U might occasionally be challenged but it will not be shabby. In any case, u dun have a choice and if u are less than 17, 55# is actually the norm.

I've got a Alumacraft Magnum 165, with a minnkota 55ap.

I fish the rivers a lot and have never had a problem with lack of power,

just lack of battery sometimes.

I installed an additional battery in parallel, problem solved. I can run pretty much all day now, plenty of power, even in current/wind.
