Yammy T8 Trim Not Holding

TSCTSC

Question

When under power, the motor slowly loses its trim position and goes deeper into the water? Is there a way I can check it to see if there is something I can do before bringing it all the way back to the dealer?

Thanks

The only real quick thing would be to make sure that the manual release screw (a big flat head screw on the lower part of the motor mounting bracket - the part that is in the water) is tight... other than that I'd say you're headed to the dealer.

I believe that if it is just a power tilt it won't hold. The tilt is just to lift it. I have a T8 also but I have never tried to run it tilted up. And on mine it just says power tilt. But if it is a tilt and trim then it should hold. I am not sure what the exact difference is but someone else here should know.

Regardless of trim or tilt it should hold the motor in the position you leave it in.

The difference between trim and tilt is that trim is for adjustment while driving / running the motor. It allows for finer adjustment of your motor angle. Trim is the slow portion of the trim and tilt motion, and on boats with more than one cylinder on the trim & tilt it is the lower, shorter cylinder that is not attached to your motor.

Tilt is the fast portion of the trim and tilt and is used to tilt the motor.

K Marine Man here is how it was explained to me and maybe you can enlighten this abit and clear it up. I was checking into power tilt for the first boat I had and if I remember right they said power tilt was just to tilt it. And it would hold at an idle or maybe just a touch more. If you wanted to trim under power you needed the power trim/tilt. And that is why that was more expensive. And I have also seen a couple of boats with just power tilt and they did drop down when speeding up. So I am curious about this. So would the fast portion on my 150 hold or would it drop down to the 2 cylinders when under power? I think I will try this when I am out next. And I will also see if my T8 will hold under power.

To make sure I'm 100% clear on what your asking, can you clarify?

I understand you as saying that power trim is only to lift the motor. Once the motor is under power, or not being lifted by the tilt unit the motor will leak down to the fully lowered position.

Is that what you mean?

Yes it is and that is what I meant for TSC. I have a '06 T8 Yammy and it only has power tilt. So in that case it shouldn't hold under power then. So in TSC's case if it is then same as mine then there is nothing wrong. And I wanted to make sure I was right on the difference between the 2.

OK. I am going to call Yamaha and double check. U guys may be right about not holding under power. Only happens when I go more than 50% throttle on it and when I do not have it trimmed all the way down.

I did call the dealer, they said to check the screw and then bring it in. They din say anything about it being normal.

Our 115 Johnson will hold. When I really trim the bejesus out of that sucker on a calm day, the "tilt" takes over when it gets up there. It holds it there just fine, it just tilts a lot faster so fine adjustments are tricky.

OK, just got off the phone with Yamaha after a 15 min wait. They say that the motor should hold. No matter what. I told them that some people said that motors without power tilt, it is normal not to hold. They said that it is not normal and could be due to hydraulic fluid needing a change, or O rings etc. That sucks cos that means down time for the motor.
