Minkota Trolling Motor

lawman

Question

I have a 65 lb Minkota Powerdrive troller. When I use the footpedal I have to use a lot of force to get the head to turn left. Is it dirty or should I replace it. I heard this happens a lot to this particular product. Any tips?

When mine starts to get like that I just take some electrical contact cleanign spray and spray it on all the contacts under the foot pedal. The spray should be mostly alcohol and evaporate with no residue left behind. I think I picked mine up at Fleet Farm so I think you can find it just about anywhere.

So far this has kept me in business.

Mine does exactly the same thing. I took the footpedal apart and cleaned everything but couldn't figure out how to get some of the internal parts off to try and figure out if anything more could be done. Put it back together with no improvement. I borrowed a neighbors foot control and everything worked fine, sooooooooooooo? Anyone have any more suggestions? Thanks

The circuit board in the foot control is sealed. Imagine one of those plastic covers they put over the computers keyboard in an auto parts store to keep the keys clean. They do a good job of keeping pop and dirt out of the keyboard but sooner or later one of the keys stick and you have to hit it harder for it to work, eventually it won't work at all. Control boards do wear out.
You wouldn't have anything to lose if you took the rocker off and had a look inside.
Maybe a twig or leaf is between contact points. Maybe a little shim in a certain spot to increase contact pressure.

I just had the same problem and fixed it!!

Here's what I did.

Carefully remove springs and pull out plastic slides. You will now see the contacts that are covered as ST said. One of my contacts had obviously "collapsed". One small drop of epoxy to build it up and it has worked for at least 50 hours of use since.

I am sure this repair wont last forever but I can just repeat as needed.

Good luck!
