QUADRASTEER

eyepatrol

Question

I'm looking into a slightly used Sierra that has the Quadrasteer option on it. I was wondering if anyone on here has it, or is familiar with it and whether there have been any problems with it? I know what it is and all, just haven't heard much about it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I've seen one. It came into the shop for an oil change. We drove it in our lot to see if it really made a difference and to our surprise the turning radius was incredibly tight. I think the option was expensive and is meeting the same fate as the honda 4 wheel steering. (I did own a prelude with 4 wheel Steering, that was a fun car!)

As far as problems I havent heard and I haven't seen any, but like I said I've only seen one.

Thanks airjer. I test drove one in 2003 when considering a truck with that option. It definitely drove a tighter radius and the turning movements were certainly different than the typical truck, but the price didn't justify buying a truck with that option at the time.

I just talked to the dealer with the vehicle that his it. He hasn't seen or heard of any real problems with the quadrasteer so far. I guess if anything does happen, the system shuts down and the steering reverts back to the front wheels.

I believe its an electric motor that actually steers the rear wheels (compared to the hondas that ran a shaft to the rear steer box). I'm not sure what the fail safe is on the unit. If it fails in the full left turn posistion does it stay in that posistion? I'd go for it! Its a pretty neat option, its to bad it didn't really catch on. What the worst that can happen? grin.gif

See ya Saturday!!

Turning left would be fun wouldn't it! wink.gif Except it wouldn't work too well backing a boat in. smirk.gif

Would you (or anyone) happen to know if there is a site like Carfax where I could get a vehicle report by entering the VIN number, yet get that info for free? Carfax charges a fee.

Ask the dealer(if thats who's selling)...they should at the very least do that for you free of charge. I just bought a decked out 04' Suburban and they performed a carfax report on any vehicle I was interested in.

Take care and good luck car shopping. I found the one I was looking for in about 2 hours and have been extremely happy with it and glad that I didn't have to spend any more time than I did before finding this one...I HATE CAR SHOPPING!

I have it and love it. I usually trade vehicles every 3 years and I'm keeping mine since it is no longer an option. I've never had an issue and there has been no recalls on it. I just got an extended warranty just in case because it could be an expensive repair.

I leave it in 4wheel steer mode all the time it turns on a dime. You will note that if you shift into neutral it will default to front steering mode. Also the tires wear very evenly so I haven't rotated them yet.

I'd go for it grin.gif

What happens if your wheels are turned and you shift into neutral? do the rear wheels automatically return to the forward position, and on the flip side when your wheels are turned and the quadrasteer is turned on do your rear wheels have to play "catch up" to be in line? This seems like a very cool feature. Just a few odd ball questions from an odd ball. grin.gif

Sounds great TV Boy! I really wanted one back in '03. Even took a 24hr test drive on one and it was pretty incredible. As long as the seller still has it, we're most likely going to be picking it up next Friday. Would get it tomorrow if I could, but work "gets in the way". tongue.gif Always seems to. wink.gif

Thanks for the reply TVB, and to all the others too. Got my fingers crossed for the next 7 days.

If you shift into neutral while moving the light blinks and goes into 2 wheel steer mode. You can't "feel" wheels turning. Everyone asks me how does it feel. i just say it feel like you are driving a smaller car it just turns tighter it doesn't really "feel" wierd unless you call turning it off and then try pulling into a parking spot and then you will notice a difference.

Yeah, I pretty well figured it would suck gas. Good thing is I live 1 mile from work and except for fishing, nearly all our traveling is done with the wife's vehicle. So I say let her eat, 'cause I only fill up once every 2 or 3 weeks anyway. cool.gif

By the way....how does it drive and handle on snow and ice??? Always wondered if there'd be a difference in those conditions.

It drives fine in the winter. The only down side to the quad steer I believe is that you can't get one with a locking rear differential. But I haven't got stuck yet. In fact I pull a ford explorer out last winter.
