Outboard Cylinder #'s

Does anyone know how the cylinders on a outboard are numbered? From the back would the #3 be the 2nd one down on the left hand side? (read like a book). Or would it be from the top down and back to the top?

Isn't it marked on the head? It should be...

It depends from the brand, but mostly the left side (from rear) is the Odd numbers and right side Even numbers.

As Lawdog says they are marked on head or block, also check your plug wires sometimes they have marked the cylinder #.
