Lindy Rigs??

anchor man

Question

Heading to Mille Lacs on Sat. and wanted to tie some rigs. What do people typically use for line lb and what type of sinker is preffered these days? I'll be using 6lb line on the main spool. Also, are these 6-9ft rigs being used with floaters, or just a plain hook?

Thanks

I've been making my own rigs for a few years now except for rigs with floaters which I just started doing this year. Basically, on my main spool line from my rod, I'll put a slip sinker on first (3/8 - 1/2oz), then a little bead of some sort to protect the knot that I tie to a snap swivel. Then for my long line rig, I use 8lb Trilene XT in green, which is the same line I have spooled on my rod/reel. Just my preference, but I've also heard of guys using fluoro (sp?) line for their snells. Anyway, I tie a ball bearing swivel on one end, then I usually put a bead of whatever color on, then I like to tie on red hooks for my snells. Again, just a preference with hook color, although I should get some greens too. As for rigging snells with floaters, I'll tie on the same ball bearing swivel, then put the float on, then a small bead and then tie the hook on. Some of my floating rigs are set up this way, other floating rigs I'll put the float on, then when I put the bead on, I'll move it up a couple inches from the hook and loop the line back through the bead, then tie the hook on. Doing this with the bead keeps the float up a couple inches away from the hook. I use 6' - 8' snells mostly. I've tried 10' - 11' snells, but that really gets long and makes it just a little more of a task when you're trying to land a fish by yourself. 95% of my snells are 6'-8' long.

Pretty long-winded response, I know, but I also wanted to be a bit descriptive too. This is just my method to the "madness". tongue.gif

Good luck up on the big pond!!!

I generally only tie the rig up that is on the rod. As they are quick/easy enough to tie on the water. I use the same line that is on my main line (6lb) or I have been playing with using a 6lb Gama Fluoro Leader. As for length, I start at anything over 6 feet and work down from there if I'm not getting fish. I usually use a red Gamakatsu hook. And sinkers, that is a standard Lindy sinker, weight depends on your depth of water.

I have been using 6lb. berkly vanish for the leaders. It has worked very well.I know some people claim its not strong enough but if the knots are tied correctly it has never been a problem for me.Burl.
