how to drain a gas tank of my boat???

Ryan_V

Question

I have an older Glastron runabout with a 75 horse johnson. dad pulled it off the showroom in 1981 and it still looks like new, we've always taken care of it. now with kids, etc, it has sat in my shed for about 3-4 years without use. I'd like to drain as much gas as I can (has 1/2 tank) before trying to fire her up, but have no idea how. is there a way to do it, or am I going to have to pull the fill tube off and try and siphon some out??? anything else I can do??? I don't doubt the old girl will fire, but with gas that old, can I trust it even though I put plenty of stabil in it prior to storage??? this is a built in gas tank. thanks in advance, you guys are a wealth of information!!!

Best way is to disconnect inlet hose at motor and connect an extension, going through transom or drain plug into a can on floor. Be sure the hose end is lower than tank, and it will flow by gravity (you might have to syphon just a little to start the flow, be careful, just a small "suck" will do the job).

Tilt front of trailer up as much as you can (with jack), you might have to use more than 1 container to store old gas.

When emptied most of tank, fill it up completely with new gasoline and add a can of Seafoam to help with leftover..

DO NOT try to put seafoam (or Stabil) and use gas in tank, it has to be emptied, it's too old.

Done, thanks Val!!!! that actually went pretty well, I think I got almost all the gas out!!! You are a wealth of knowledge as usual!! if you ever need advice about sitting in a recliner drinking beer, let me know!!! Is the Sea Foam important???

thanks again!!

Ryan, thanks, I am just a guy that has done these things, I am passing along what I know.

I would like to get lessons about the sitting on a recliber drinking beer. I've never done that....I don't know what that means... wink.gifwink.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

You can get away from seafoam since you have a new tankful, but it would be nice to add it everytime you refill.

thanks again Val.... put 12 gallons of fresh oil and a can of sea foam and turned the key after over 3 years since first use!!! fired up on the second crank!!! that '81 Johnson has more miles on it than anything and has never failed in any way shape or form. all we've ever done to it since it was new is to change plugs every few years. the boat still looks like new!!!

Just pick up a recliner for free at a garage sale and put it in your long shed. Then buy a case of barley pop and call me and I'll drive down and show you how to do it.Its real easy.By the way, pick up a couple steaks for the grill to as I probably wont be able to drive home. wink.gifwink.gifwink.gif

Call me at 612 756 0149, I'll throw on the grill some steaks like you never had before, you can cut them with a fork.....
