I have one in my boat but I doen't use it very much any more since cell phones work on most MN lakes. We do still use it on rainy once a year so it's still worth having.

Everyone should have a Marine Radio it can save you, your family and friends lives.

Cell phone coverage although good can be useless in certain area's, I would suggest having both a cell phone and a Marine radio, fixed units with antennas mounted to the boat are best but portable units work good and are priced under $100.

With a Marine radio you can locate other boats in the area or on shore of the body of water your using.

I spend a lot of time up on Rainy Lake, and after one bad experience up there, I would not go up there without my marine radio. It has come in very handy. On a lake like Rainy it also provides a source of entertainment as you listen to the conversations between the houseboats and the resorts. "I hit an "unmarked" rock with the houseboat and now both props are gone. what do I do now?" this is a conversation I heard on a trip last year....

Range is dependent on antenna length. I have a 4ft antenna and I know that is good for at least several miles. I think there are formulas for computing the max range for a given antenna length....
