I went out fishing with a couple buddies today, did pretty good on the panfish but found a few loons cruising the lake and saw it as an oppurtunity. .

i believe he/she is spitting?

is this an immature bird or do they all have brown like this? sharpened a bit too much. . .

missed the focus a bit on the last two. .

Nothing to be dissappointed in here, if these are your first try. They are a little bit over contrasted, but it looks like they were taken when the sun was high, so that would be expected. Loons are very difficult, very difficult, to get a good exposure on anyways because they are black and white, but they are super tough on sunny days. I think you did a good job. Heck they're better then the first ones I ever took ten years ago.
