Deer Head Found in Freezer

A friend of mine is cleaning out his deceased father's house. He found a deer head in the freezer. It is a nice 10 pointer. He remembers his dad got a big deer about 10 years ago. The head is well wrapped in plastic. My buddy is considering having it mounted as a keepsake. l am curious to know if the head is still good and can be mounted.

The best person to tell you would be a taxidermist. I was once told that if it has freezer burn that it might not be able to be mounted. Good luck.

If the hide is shot, you might consider a nice European mount.

if the cape is no good, you may be able to find a taxidermist who can replace it. many of them keep extra capes around for situtations like this, of if one has been damaged beyond repair when skinning.

The problems you might run into are

1-Ear cartilage is freezer burned.,

2-Eye lids are frezzer burned.

3-Nose nostrils could have damage.

When you skin the hide off the head you have to turn the ears inside out and trim the cartilage,split the eye lids and do a few other things.It might be O.K.,but you probably have at the least some damage.I would take it to someone and have it skinned out and checked.As stated above you can buy capes from another deer and use that or you could just mount the rack.The other thing you can do this fall if the cape is bad is talk to a few locker plants that process deer and see if they will give you one of the capes a customer doesnt want.You just need to tell them that it is to be used for a head mount or it may not come to you skinned right.
