4 strokes and border waters

bwtrout

Question

i'm looking at a 4 stroke 20hp short shaft honda. seems to me like this would be a better choice for the 25hp limit border lakes. lighter (125# vs 217#?) and easier to pull start. i've got a good price on the 20hp. will i lose that much power going with a 20hp? i'm told the 20hp is a 15hp block (2 cylinder vs a 3 cylinder?) i would be running a bare bones deep 'v' 16' boat.

Are you sure you can run that short shaft on such a big boat?

I've got the bigfoot (long shaft)15hp Merc on my WC14 Lund and I wouldn't be able to run a short shaft on it.

Did you check this out already?

As for the 2 vs. 3 cylinder I'd say you're fine...

Sounds like you've already made up your mind on motors. If a 20% reduction in power is worth the difference in weight, why not go with the 20? I don't think the difference in top speed would be worth taking into consideration.

Buy what works best for you and your situation. (Same works with your vote wink.gif )

I should add that the difference between a 15 and 20 is probably just carb settings...

What are the power comparisons between a 2 and 4 stroke? If I was looking at a 25 horse, would there be much of a difference? (I hope you dont mine me jumping in here bwtrout) Thanks!

On Honda's site, the 15 and the 20 have the same displacement (21.4 c.i.) and the same bore and stroke (59mm x64mm). So they would have to be tuned differently. Wt is 116# either way.

The 3 cylinder 25 HP is listed at 184# dry.
