Killed that ******* Monkey

Went out to the Crow Yesterday and finally got that dam Monkey off my back, had 4 trips this year with nothing, was starting to think there was actually some skill to this catfishing thing blush.gifgrin.gif. My first spot produced nothing and I thought here we go again, so moved up river aways, and instantly had a bite, didnt hook up though and got real fustrated, thought I might have missed my only bite for the day but 8 beautifull Kitties later I was satisfied and went home a happy (smelly) guy. grin.gif Also got the huge bonus of the first fish being my largest Channell ever (officially) at 14 pounds and 2 more that were over 7. You guys werent kidding about them being able to squash fingers placed in there mouths, that big girl drew blood on my thumb when I lipped her out of the water (must be a bass guy thing) and now my nail is turning colors confused.gif I think she liked me blush.gifgrin.gif. I might have to head out and get a dedicated cat rod after this, something with a bait feeder or clicker so I dont have to hold the reel thumbing the spool, should make things more relaxing!

Way to go dude!!!

#1- 14lb Channel Cat is an awesome fish!! Good job!

#2- Keep your fingers out of their mouths!! Best way to handle a big cat is behind the gill plate. If you reach way up, you'll find something to grab onto. BTW- Gloves are for *******'s grin.gif

#3- For channel cats, don't worry about a bait clicker on a reel, just get yourself a good rod holder or make one yourself. You can make a pretty good rig with a piece of PVC pipe, short length of rebar, and some duct tape. Sit fairly close to your rod but most times they will grab your bait and you will see the rod bending over. This is a great time to be using circle hooks. They set the hook on themselves and you crank them in. No hook setting required.

#4- We try to not talk about Bass in this forum unless they are legal to use as bait. grin.gifwink.gif

That is a beauty for the crow! If it were a little smaller, we could we could put it on the front pagethumbs.gif Would this be in the north fork by any chance? Try not to handle catfish by the gills if you can help it. People give me a hard time for using gloves to pick up channels by the mouth but oh well, I don't always have a net.

Next time your in for a physical, tell your doctor he doesn't need the gloveglpleased.gif

Ahhh dont feel bad Hanson..... my small ones were about that size blush.gifgrin.gif

I really dont like picking anything up by the gill plates, it just feels wrong to me, Ill take my chances with lipping em, I think she was just extra P.O.'d cause she had been stealing my bait on 3 consecutive casts and I finally got her! But she did put alot more pressure on my thumb than I though was possible, might as well have put it in a vice and clamped down! I dont know where the north fork is, I was around St Michael. I dont think that is north fork?

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
