Ram Rod Holder positions on boat

iffwalleyes

Question

I am planning on putting 4 Ram holders on my boat this spring but I am trying to decide where the best spot on the gun wales would be to locate them. I would suppose 2 in the front and 2 in the back. Where do you put the ones in the back, mid way back or all the way in the back? Or sould one just get more mounting bases to put in the different locations to give you more mounting location possiblities?

What type of boat? Tiller or console? I like two as far back as possible that I can grab while standing on the floor and not reaching back any further. When trolling you're going to be fighting the fish back to the boat, so you want to be near the transom area or rear of the boat anyway.

Seating also has to be a consideration as you don't want a rod butt where a seat could swing into it or sitting right in the chest of your buddy while he's seated. One up by the driver (console) is also nice if you troll while holding onto the rod and steering for a quick place to put the rod, but then again you have to consider where the butt will be and if you have room in that area between you and the console.

Oh, and then after you have your master plan and got it all figured out, look underneath the gunnel before you drill. It may alter your location based on what is under there.

For my boats I usually have 8-10 bases and about 6 rod holders. It's not too often that I use the rod holders in the front of the boat, but occassionally they get used. I like the versatility of multiple bases.
